is it possible to turn off the dip beam lights that automatically turn on when the car starts.I beleive that volvo dealers can do it by resetting part of the cars ecu, however they are likely to charge £40 plus . Is their a DIY option. The function seems to irritate other drivers who often flash thier headlights.Tony

Afraid not, must be done at dealers

I seriously doubt other drivers are flashing you because of the DRLs, it never happened to me in either of my Volvos.
Perhaps you should have them check the headlight aim when you take it in to turn off the DRLs?

Both previous answers correct, in other words, you will need to consult a franchised Volvo dealer. However you should also make sure the load adjustment setting for the headlamps is correctly set. In other words if it is set at 3 passengers and you are running solo, then you will get flashed.

thankyou all for your interest ,I found the answer on an american volvo website. Just below the rotary lights on and off switch. in the same panel ,is a small recessed screw ,turning that anti clock wise half a turn , turns off the day running lights, other than that the lights work normally, problem solved ,again thank you for your interest . tony

Tony, just a thought. Your insurance company might consider the day lights as a safety feature of your car which in turn goes towards how much you pay for your car insurance. As the safety feature has now been disabled, you *may* well be legally obliged to inform them so they can adjust your premium. If they do require notification and you fail to inform them, in turn it could invalidate your insurance in the event of a claim.

hi , dave its an interesting point, however as the turn off screw is a standard feature on the car,ie it allows the lights to be turned off without any modification to the car, wouldnt that just be exercising one of the cars features or options, ? tony

hi dave its an interesting point - wouldnt that just be exercising one of the cars features or options, ?
Tony, only your insurance company can answer that.

I do not know to which model or model year that website is referring. However I have just checked my 08my V50 and there is no recessed screw there.
Mind you I would rather be seen than not seen. Remember EU directive calls for all UK registered new cars to have daytime running lights soon.

Volvo C70-00 2.0 it is in the title. Easily missed. Regards Peter

This applies to the 'classic' volvos. s/V70 -2000 and c70 -2003. But if people are flashing then likely that they need adjusting - maybe the rear springs are sagging?

if you read the hand book it tells you how to switch off day running lights, also on volvos the daylight running lights are dim dip so will not dazzle other road users , this can be seen when you switch on head lamps at night they get a lot brighter, so beam adjusters will make no differane
