my 04 x-trail makes a humming noise from the front o/s only when steering left
everything looks ok under neath but i suspect it may be the drive shaft support bearing making the noise has anyone had a similar problem or can offer any advice - cheers

Wheel Bearing
|
If when turning left, the right wheel should not be under as much load?
If so why does that say wheel bearing is faulty?
Have you changed the tyres over?, just a long shot.

If when turning left the right wheel should not be under as much load?
When turning left at any speed, more of the weight of the car is taken by the right wheels and suspension, with an increase in lateral forces..hence more noise from any faulty bearing.
Admittedly the poster did not say what speed they were noticing this noise, but I assume at 20 or 30 mph plus. If it's at a walking pace when at full lock, reverse or forwards, then I suppose it could be a CV joint although they normally click or rumble.

It's logical to assume that if the noise is when turning left, then it's the right hand wheel bearing.
The last couple of cases I've experienced have defied logic!

Its always been the one under load in my experience but I have heard of instances of it not being.

sounds just like a wheel bearing but there is so much drag through the transmission that is is impossible to spin the wheel i geuss i will just have to strip it down and have a look

Jack it up, grip the top and bottom of the wheel and rock it back and forth, you should be able to feel it if there is a problem. You will feel a slight knock as you do it....it's subtle. Then jack up the other side and repeat. You should feel a difference if you only have one bad wheel bearing.
