NCB for two cars - Will Marshall
can't have it on two cars (however you can if both are with SAGA)

My twist on the situation is that having purchased another car I realise that the old one has only a months insurance left to run. (not with SAGA)

I am going to be storing it off road and don't particularly want to insure it whilst it is stored as it isn't worth much.

However we do definitely need to use the old car for the next month.

This means that to get the ncb for the new car with SAGA we will have to cancel existing ncb policy on the old car and take a month's temporary insurance on old one without any ncb

SAGA don't do short term policies.

This will cost me cancellation fee plus a months insurance without ncb
through my other brokers

Unless you have any other suggestions - doubt an existing policy with ncb can be seamlessly changed to one without for an additonal fee?

What a rigmarole!

don't cancel your policy. you will be paying the insurance company more money for less service and continuing the policy will get you another year's ncb.

try one of the short term insurance companys. things like dayinsure and shortpolicy. i haven't used them and they are probbably expensive compaired to anual BUT it gets you out of a hole.

Thanks for the short term suggestions alfatrike.

If I don't cancel the existing ncb policy on the old car won't this invalidate the policy for the new car with SAGA? The new car policy is being taken out on the basis that I have ncb for it (otherwise it will cost me an arm and a leg more.) SAGA only allow ncb for two cars if they are both insured through them.

I didn't become aware of the two car ncb issue until afterwards and was told they could use this as a get out to avoid payment if a claim arose. Is this correct?

I have full ncb so the extra year won't make any difference.

I would have no problem if I were keeping the old car on the road over the next year because then SAGA would pay the cancellation fee (because I was swapping the old car to them) and allow me ncb for two cars.

i think i've worked it out:

keep the old car insured to avoid paying a cancelation fee.

insure the new car on a short term policy and then insure full time with your chosen insurer when the month is over.

OR

will saga allow you to add a car for a month?

Bonuses can be duplicated. There is no reason not to after all it is your bonus. I have that facility all the time. It is just uneducated and/or greedy Brokers that don't.

Right, so I reckon SAGA are trying to bluff me into swapping the old car over to being insured with them, because after they said they didn't do a short term policy I thought I might as well get a quote for the year just to see what they would charge.

It was after that I asked them about the two ncb's with different insurers

Norwich Union, as was, do a short term, fully comp. insurance which starts at £10.50 for one day and about £30 for a week. When daughter took it out for 3 weeks was only £55. This still may be cheaper than your other suggestions.

Sometimes I've been selling the old car privately after the new car has arrived. My insurer has always allowed me to cover both cars for up to a month in return for a small fee (usually about £15). I'd try them again using this scenario - they may find it in their rule book!

Privilege duplicated a NCB for me.
Also many companies will give a full NCB to a named driver, so just take out a new policy in your wife's name.

Depending on your Ins Co - I found my company accommodating.

I had 2 cars, purchased a 3rd and took out a new policy and got full NCB, when the policy on the 2nd car finished I let it lapse. So for about 6 weeks I insured 3 cars and it cost me about £18 more in that time - cancelling a car and replacing with the new car involved £25 admin charge+ increased premiums.

I would like to buy a 2 seater convertible for fun in the weekend sunshine, trips to the beach for example :) , and a sensible car for everyday use and the quotes I am getting are silly for the second convertible car

I looked at buying a 12 month old Audi A4 2.0 auto and 1999 MX5 and the two insurance quote from Admiral and another company who advertise two car insurance was almost the same for the two cars, around £500 each

I doo not get this as when one car is use the other will be in the drive, the Mazda used in summer

When I got a replacement car, I called the insurer to change the policy over and whilst I was on the phone asked about cover for a month for the old car while I got rid of it.
The just sent me a cover note for a month for the old car FOC.

Direct Line (although no longer with them).

I think the problem can be solved by talking to someone who understands insurance rather than someone who is just answering phones and responding to what the computer tells them.

I had a similar situation two years ago, and visited my local Swintons branch. The young, inexperienced and frankly uninterested girl who was on the main desk was absolutely useless, but luckily her manager in the back office caught wind of what was being requested, intervened and sorted it out with the minimum of fuss. I can't praise the manager highly enough.

You may find a similar story if you visit a broker rather than trying to plough through the call centres and internet sites - it actually saved me money going through the offices directly.

Depending on the insurance company many will do a TAV (temporary additional vehicle )for a month !!

You used to be able to cover a vehicle just fire and theft if it was kept in a garage and did not use it on the road !!! during the winter months motorists who owned convertibles would insure the car for the year and at the end of summer reduce the cover to fire and theft ??

This was 10-15 years ago I do not know if they still do it !!

Thanks everyone.

As suggested, I have referred the issue to a manager, physically going there is not possible - the phone staff saying it "should be o'k" somehow failed to reassure me :)

Had I alrready been with SAGA this issue would not have arisen as they mirror ncb onto a second car as well.

It's because my existing brokers didn't have any policies with longterm
fully comp cover for the continent that I took the new car out with SAGA who do. It was after doing this that someone pointed out the two car ncb issue to me. Whilst SAGA will do it in house I'm not sure how there underwriters see it in regard to the ncb being built up on an out of house policy thta is still running.

blinking daft anyway, it's me that has the ncb not the car, if I sold it tomorrow I'd still have a full ncb

Getting somewhere.

Didn't want to wait on the never never for a manager to contact me within 24hrs so managed to get a very helpful person in customer services.

Unlike the wishywashy and some might say misleading (no surprises there) sales staff she was categorical from the outset that the ncb wasn't vaild for the new car and after my pointing out that this had left me in the lurch she suggested I contact my other insurance brokers to see if they would remove the ncb from that existing policy, then Saga would refund the extra fee involved for doing so.

Have arranged that with the other brokers at a cost of approx £30
but can't get back through to c/s at saga yet to finalise because all lines are busy lol
