Good day for Britain in the Tour de France.
Mark Cavendish won the stage in Paris making his fifth stage win and a new British record.
Bradley Wiggins came fourth overall and another British best.
Congratulations to them both.
I realise this isn't strictly motoring related, but could the Mods let it run to see if it has legs?

I'm not trying to diss mighty-thighed cyclists, but Private Eye's sports page this week gives today's route for the Bore de France, a mountainous sector from Boredeaux via Ennui, Snoozier and Yaune to Snaure-sur-Lit.
Elsewhere in the page is a story headlined MEN WIN CRICKET MATCH that runs, in its entirety:
'Today some men won a cricket match against some other men (Reuter)'.
I love Private Eye. It makes me laugh.

You've got to follow the sport to understand it, Lud. It can be like Dallas and Dynasty on wheels, full of double dealing, backstabbing and intrigue. Not to mention physical efforts that are beyond ordinary mortals.
I wish I had a car that could accelerate like Mark Cavendish.

Probably one of the cleanest of all the major sports. The level of testing, both in terms of tests carried out and the advanced methods used are way ahead of what everyone else is doing, neither is the sport afraid to publicly name and shame the cheats.
Football doesn't have tests for drugs such as EPO because "they are too expensive". Or rather, they are scared by what it is well known that they would find.

Probably one of the cleanest of all the major sports.
If no drug cheats are detected this year, it will be the first drug free feild since 1924
And only because the masking agents have probably moved up a notch.

You were lucky that you weren't watching on Spanish TV - a minute and a half from the end of the race they cut to a commercial because it had over-run it's time-slot, and then switched it to another unscheduled channel. Was watching on TV and listening to the Eurosport commentary via the internet.
Had some boring patches in the second week, but livened up in the last week. Glorious TV shots from the helicopters throughout.
Bring on the Vuelta next month!

Today's win for Mark Cavendish actually brings his 2009 Tour wins to six.

Im sorry but since when was the TdF ever a motoring related subject? Dont they have cycling forums for this? We are always being told to keep it motoring related, why is this an exception?
|
Because we're preparing you for the time when all you will be able to afford for transport is a bicycle (see tomorrow's Telegraph)

I did ask the mods for some leeway.
In the same way that we celebrated when England won the Rugby World Cup.

This probably doesn't fit into any other thread here - not even IHAQ. So Stu is right but for those not really following the Tour de France this thread stands for now.
But not sure what needs discussing here so now read only.
