I have a 5yr old japanese hatchback that I want to sell/trade-in when I get my new car. The car (1.3 Mitsubishi Colt) is in good condition but has done 50,000 miles. I don't think I'll get a good deal on a trade-in so I'd rather get shot of the old car myself. What's the best way to do this? I guess the car is worth £3000 tops but I'd be happy to take less. Is an auction a good bet or will I get ripped off?

Get the best p/x price you can, and also get a price to buy the new car with no p/x and then try and sell it privately. If you can then great, if not then take the p/x. The auction price is unlikely to be any more than the p/x, especially considering the hassle.

Why not try your local free-ads paper first. This kind of car is the right price, mileage to attract some attention.
Auction is a possibility but success depends on the type of sales your local auction holds.Remember there is entry fees and commision on selling price plus VAT.
If you live on a busy road it would be a good idea to advertise it with a for sale sign at the end of your driveway. (i've sold most my cars this way).

I would take an attractive photo and stick it in Autotrader internet only, £15 for 6 weeks. Describe it fully (history, owners etc.). Because it's not an obvious Japanese hatchback to buy you might have to be patient. I would guess it would sell OK on a forecourt, so you might not get too bad a trade-in - definitely better than auction I would say. Or you could talk to dogbreath on the £3000 runaround thread...
