Hi, was hoping someone would be able to offer some advice on my Focus problem.
To summarise a long-winded story, the engine blew and an engineering specialist place said they could replace the pistons and piston rings even though other places had told me this wasn't possible. They did the work and all was fine for 4 weeks till engine blew again. Now all 4 pistons needed replacing instead of 2. 4 weeks later they tell me they did this but the bottom of the engine needs replacing too and will look on ebay for a part. Having just done a google I find sites saying you cant replace the bottom of a zetec engine. Am I better off telling these guys that it's not possible and that I want a replacement engine or let them get on with it, the car has been off the road for 4 weeks and its causing us major problems.

always treat a zetec engine as a throwaway north star item
ive seen head gaskets done but personally dont like the idea
i would definately have gone looking for a new donkey if the car was mine,i would never strip it down to its crank

I'd agree with bell boy on this, get a replacement engine from a scrap car, this is what I did two or three years ago.

For a 1.6 zetec-e I paid about £200 for the engine delivered to a garage and a further £250 for the engine to be fitted, this included a new cambelt, plugs and obviously oil and coolant.

Included in that price was the cost of an MOT and a few other bits that needed doing.

All, thanks for the info. Any tips on where to get a decent engine, looked on ebay and autotrader and they want about £400 for one ?

Where abouts are you? The breakers I got the engine from delivered free as fairly local, I imagine autotrader/ebay prices are going to be inflated if delivery is included.

Also bear in mind that the zetec i replaced was a zetec-e for an escort, prices might be higher for the later zetec-r and zetec-se versions which I think will be in a focus.

Edit: Bedfords too far for free delivery, maybe another BR member can recomend somewhere.

I'm in Bedford, just done a seach on yell and there's a few dismantlers around so will give them a ring tomorrow.
