13 pin electrics Golf Mk6 - tack
VW want £231 +labour to fit a 13pin socket to my Golf. I want to be able to fit a light board when I use my bike rack.

Anyone know where/how it could be done more reasonably priced? As far as this sort of work is concerned my skills are nil.

Although I see a lot of cars with bike racks without light boards, I don't want to risk a tug in bandit country (Essex) or in France where "Les Ros'bifs" may be considered fair game for "Le Plerd"

Cheers

Where are you?

If you buy the official kit, it may simply be a case of plugging the harness in, especially as you don't need the permanent 12v supply (for caravan fridge) which is normally run as a separate cable from the battery. But it may then need to go to the dealer to be configured on the computer.

I know there have been problems recently with VAG group electrics (especialyl since trailer stability systems started to be built in), but I'm sure the better fitters know what they're doing.

I'd try the witter or bosal towbar sites and use one of their fitters, or a member of the NTTA.

For a lighting board, you normally only need 7-pin.

Brink do dedicated kits in both 7-pin and 13-pin, and they quote 40-60 mins fitting time. No mention of whether the car needs hooking up to a computer at the dealer, but a brink approved fitter would probably know.

I paid Skoda to do mine - which wasn't much cheaper. I didn't want later problems with the CANbus system ( I was told on here that they are a minefield - especially on VAG cars) without some come back on VAG. I intended to keep the roomie much longer than I did and figured the cost was justified.

Edit: Just remembered Skoda wanted that much for a full towbar and electrics.
