Watch out - they are fining you now for using these when you buy your parking ticket. I managed to get away with it today, but I have suspicion I was otherwise heading for a fine of some sort. Probably a civil job so possibly more about scare tactics than securing a prosecution.
No doubt the holier than thou lot will be along in a minute to condemn me and all my friends and family to eternal damnation, but I thought I'd run that particular gauntlet to let others be aware of what may befall them if they are as much of a menace to society as I was this morning.

It's perfectly obvious what is happening here. Unauthorised users of motorway service area service roads are being photographed and placed on a national database. The next time they attempt to pay for parking anywhere an additional charge is applied. In the case of supermarket car parks you won't get your parking fee back irrespective of how much you spend in the shop.

So how does that work for taxi drivers, courier drivers etc who have a legitimate reason to use the access roads? How do the cameras know whether you're supposed to be there or not? I suspect you're being a tiny bit paranoid.
I used to collect passengers on a fairly regular basis from the police post at Toddington services northbound, and coming from Bedford I really didn't fancy trekking all the way down to J11 at Dunstable and back so I used to use the access road off the A5120. Never had any problems, even waved to oncoming police drivers occasionally.

The operator of a car park is not going to act as some sort of unofficial debt collector on behalf of a service station owner.

It was Birch services M62.
I was meeting a colleague and continue in one car. I went to to the shop to buy a ticket and there was a machine on the counter on which you had to key in your reg. There was also a photo of me entering the car park and I had to confirm if this was my car, at which point it asked me to enter my staff code number.
I simply looked a bit helpless at the person behind the counter and they turned the machine round and presumably cancelled it and I paid for my parking ticket.
Who knows, I might have a nasty letter in the post.

At our local motorway services (M4 Reading) it is not possible to just use the back route to the services without getting someone to open the barrier. If it was, it would have cut nearly 2 miles off my journey every time I went anywhere on the M4.

You used to be able to RO/RO both North & Southbound at Newport Pagnell via the surrounding C-roads in years gone by. In fact, to get on Northbound you had to drive right past the on-site police-station. It used to save me almost 5-miles a time but they've been barriered/camera'd for quite a while now so not possible today I guess?
Meanwhile, on that old chestnut ? fuel parity! Shell Unleaded & Diesel both selling at £101.9 in MK this morning. Why aren't we out on the streets burning cattle or similar?

They di have to control it, otherwise the access road would become like another motorway junction ; but it has not been planned or built like one.
I guess control by barrier gets a bit tedious for authorised users , and simply telling people by signs that they should not use them clearly isn't enough to stop some people.

At one time the access to the services at Scratchwood M1 was controlled by a keypad barrier. They even changed the code on a regular basis, however unofficial networking resulted in propagation of the new code very quickly by 'pyramid' telephone calls. This was before the days of email and SMS, just imagine how easy it is now!
