Scenario : Lovely sunny day, decide to go for a drive in the country and hot diggedy dog! no traffic! What's playing on your Radio/CD/Tape/MD/MP3/DAB/LP/Wax disc?
Me? "18" by Moby, rather too loud or some shoe staring music from the early 90s
Lee.

Money for Nothing - Dire Straits.
|
Stones - Honky Tonk Women. Or, on the late night motorway race, Autobahn by Kraftwerk.
|
Alan Parson's Project (how sad is that)

Mark,
Now you're talking - I've reached that comfortable age when all the real good music (ie stuff I like) is being discounted, and seeing as my tapes are wearing out, I'm reaplceing stuff with CD. Brothers in Arms is on my "buy on sight" radar.
Lee.

Have to be careful about what's on the radio - any Stones up tempo number sees me well over the speed limit, and Baby Come Back by the Equals has the valves rattling in time with the music.
|
And to bring you down from that state and closer to 30 mph a bit of Pink Floyd should do it - "Comfortably Numb" springs to mind!

The Archers.

The Dandy Warhols, Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia - a perfect opener for driving on a sunny day. Crowded House good too.

I don't know what this means, but I checked out my CD machine:
ZZ Top Greatest Hits
George Thorogood Live
Elvis at Madison Square Garden
Aerosmith Big Ones
Buddy Guy It Feels Like Rain
BB King & Eric Clapton Riding with The King
The Best of The Doors
Sheryl Crow and Friends
Muddy Waters Hard Again.....
......all good V-8 music, but wait!, what's this: Nancy Krall, When I Look In Your Eyes -- must be a Growlette protest disc. That's going....
Change is inevitable -- progress is optional.

Oh well, I never did go for street cred...and we haven't got a family car for nothing.
PS Favourite driving song is 'Don't Stop Me Now' by Queen. Actually, that's probably favourite song in general. Ever.

Reminds me of the old saying: your car's your daughter's when it's time to hit the town, your wife's when it's time to do the shopping, and yours when it needs filling up!
(and your kids, when it comes to the in-car entertainment!)

"What's playing on your Radio/CD/Tape/MD/MP3/DAB/LP/Wax disc?"
In my car, it's got to be Shake Rattle and Roll (!!) by Bill Haley
|
|
Well, you forgot to mention 8 track cartridge there.
Anyway it's currently Intergalactic Sonic 7s by Ash, or rather worryingly Wish you were here by Pink Floyd.
Matthew Kelly
No, not that one.

It's the stuff I listened to at Uni in Manchester, like the Happy Mondays, Charlatans, Inspiral Carpets, Stone Roses. The dancing at that time was either the "Inner City" / "MC Hammer" type wave your hands about like you're juggling or slouching from foot to foot staring at your shoes, like Shaun Ryder lead singer of the Mondays. Given that I had the same same dodgy barnet as Mr Ryder at the time, the shoe staring appealed. That, and I can't dance for toffee!
Someone mentioned above being careful what records you listen to as it affects your driving. It's for that simple reason that I don't listen to the Jam in the car. There lies points and sadness.

Brothers in Arms £6.99 incl free delivery from www.cd-wow.com. (chart albums 8.99)
I have no connection with this firm, but have used them a number of times and found them totally reliable. They are Hong-Kong based so some albums are HK editions, but fine.
Great for playing in your car CD player (tenous motoring link!)
Don't know if this is outwith the bounds of what we're meant to post, but sorry Mark if I've done wrong!

Probably similar to what my selection says about me: you can take the guy out of the era but you can't take the era out of the guy.

Currently in the CD changer or sitting in the car
Steve Harley
Corrs
Russell Watson
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
John Coltrane

Dire Straits
Some Bluegrass compilation, not played much as the driving speed tends to rise along with the totally frantic tempo of the music. ;-(
Fairly eclectic mix

Peter Gabriel - Shakin' the Tree.
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Texas Flood.
Alex Harvey - Next.
Donizetti - Lucia (highlights).

Thank goodness for Steve S, Mozart and Dvorak. I dare mention Wagner now! In Toad is rather a good way to listen to Gotterdammerung - sorry about no umlauts - especially now the ears are going!
(Can't stand pop; and almost every motoring TV programme and many others are wrecked by the STUPID bump thump they put on so I can't make out what is being said, or hear the machinery.)
Must try Shostakovich 5; I like a GOOD row.
Tomo

And does nobody go for classic jazz?
Tomo

Thank goodness at least two people listen to proper music.I think I have been stuck in traffic jams next to the rest of you.
ps I don't like shostakovich though I take it you have spelt the name right I couldn't be bothered to check.

What radio programme would make you wish you'd taken the bus instead of driving?
A "Friend of the Earth" being interviewed by Jimmy Young would top my list.

HS,
Ages ago I was going to ask you "HS, as in Made in Japan?"...but forgot.
Good man.

Was a bit dubious about joining this thread but now I realise I'm not the only one whose musical tastes haven't got past 1974!! "Made in Japan" David - you mean the live double LP of which I have a white label (first pressing?) version? Nobody's mentioned Led Zep yet. Mind you, you could make a cracking collection from the ones mentioned above. And here's another - Argus, Wishbone Ash, now out on CD £7.99
PhilW

Oops, sorry HS - Led Zep top of your list. Red wine and old age I'm afraid

Phil,
Yep that's the one. If the first few notes of Smoke on the Water didn't make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck then .....well you weren't alive!

It's good to know that I'm not the only one who appreciates classic rock (a.k.a. "real" music). I also like to listen to Free's albums in the car, 'Mr Big' on Fire and Water always makes driving to work better. Anyone else?
Did I leave my lights on?
|
I very rarely have music on while I'm driving. I prefer to listen to the sweet singing of my straight six engine ... honestly!
I often switch the radio on in traffic jams though. Usually for jazz or light classical but good music of any kind, any era, suits me fine.
|
|
HS,
(Sadly!!) me too! used to have all these things on 8-track 'til the machine ate them all about 20 (or more!)years ago. Found "Free - Live" recently on CD (IMCD 73 842 359-2) Tracks you mention plus All right now, I'm a mover, Be my friend, Ride on pony, The Hunter and Get where I belong. The bass is something else!
