I am driving down to Italy in the summer as usual, though this time we are having a couple of nights in Innsbruck on the way down. I know you need an Austrian Motorway tax sticker (vignette?), is it possible to buy one online like you can the Swiss one, if not where is the best place to purchase? (I only need the 10 day one by the way).
Second question, we are doing the Hull - Rotterdam ferry then heading for a night in Basel with relatives. Which is a recommended route? The route planners seem to go through Luxembourg then into France near Metz. Someone else has suggested going all the way down in Germany.
Thanks

You can buy the vignette in any motorway service station in Austria. We pulled in at the first one we found, and had no problems.
We did the same thing last year (went to Mori in the Trentino region of Italy) and took a route through Germany, across the Alps and into Austria. Off the tunnel, head directly for Belgium, round Brussels, skim the bottom of Holland, into Germany, Austria, Italy. It was a good run, and we will do the same this year, although stupidly we did it overnight in one hit last year, which we won't repeat.
This year we've booked an overnight stop in a pretty little hotel in Nesselwang which is a very picturesque ski resort nestling in Alps near the German / Austrian border.
Our route took 14 hrs from getting off the tunnel, to arriving at the front door of our friends house in Mori, and probably the best part of 2 hrs of that involved comfort breaks / fuel stops . All "motorway" except for the Alpine pass, and completely toll free until you hit Austria. Cruised around 130km/h for most of it, with the odd blast up to 160-170 in Germany (well you've got to haven't you?)
Cheers

Cheers DP. The overnight stop in Basel means we can't go straight from Germany into Austria which makes staying in Germany maybe a bit longer. Will have to put the routes into the planner and see how much longer it would be.

How are you getting from Basel to Innsbruck ? You will also need a Vignette for Switzerland if using the Swiss motorways.
Rotterdam to Basel I would take:
A15 --> Nijmegen
A73 --> Venlo
A61 --> Mannheim
A5 --> Basel.
Should be doable in about 6.5 hours (if you don't get stuck behind the Dutch and their mobile home convoy).
