Hi
I've posted this problem here before and despite all the suggestions and an expensive visit to a VW dealer, it is still stalling and running rough when cold. I've had the water temp sensor changed and the VW diagnostic shows nothing wrong. An RAC man tells me it may be the Lamda sensor in the catalytic convertor? Its got the Bosch injection system.
Any ideas.

Before you try anything more expensive, spend a few quid on a bottle of VW's own fuel additive (part number G 001 700 03 -- you might need this because dealers seem woefully ignorant of its existence). I had similar problems with an Audi 100 and it cured them overnight, after repeated attention by main dealers made any impact whatsoever. I have used the stuff ever since and I thank HJ for the original lead to it. It's particularly good at counteracting the effects of short-trip driving and it does seem to boost fuel economy too.

For "any impact" read "no impact".

What is this stuff -- some type of injector cleaner?

Yes, injector cleaner and octane enhancer, I believe. It's like similar products available from accessory shops, but it's cheaper and, in my case, it seemed to be more effective. As HJ has warned, treat it with great care because it's a nasty chemical concoction.

Roger-you had suggested this back in the summer and I tried it but it made no difference at all I'm afraid. I wish it had been that simple......

OK. Sorry about that. My next suggestion is that you find a good independent VW specialist, such as Mike Chapman in St Albans. I remain underwhelmed by the effectiveness of the main dealers, especially with the more abstruse problems.

depends what 1.8 engine you have. abs code is multipoint injection i think if i remember rightly aaz is monopoint.
if your car is monopoint the remove air trunking and remove injector from throttle body. it is held in with two screws and just lifts out. take to local injection specialist and have ultrasonically cleaned around £16 plus vat. 99% sure this will solve your problem. also check that idle control motor is working correctly as these fail.

I've been reading your discussion about mIII 1.8 golfs, does this only happen to autos cause i'm looking to buy a manua tomorrow
many thanks
