Usually when cold or at low revs. engine fails to pick-up to the point of almost stalling. Feels like fuel starvation but picks up if I change down. No warning lights and main dealer is hopeless as computer says nothing is wrong. (What happened to mechanics?). Anyone any ideas please?

I've just had the same problem but mine showed the engine management light and the computer did show a fault. A few connections were cleaned and checked and all seems to be well, for the moment. Might it be worth getting connections and the 'multi plug(s)' checked anyway? I know this isn't too helpful as the computer shows 'no fault' but there clearly is one. What about trying a diesel/injection specialist rather than your main dealer? Good luck whatever!

Thanks for reply. Spoke to Bosch and diesel specialists who tell me that only Rover can sort this out as their computers are just as good as the manufacturers. Suggested I leave the car (and deeds to the house) until fault discovered at indeterminate cost.
Not being unhepful but if it doesn't show up on the computer they may as well dismantle the car and start again!
I think I'll but a classic car next time. My neighbour just takes his apart of an afternoon and puts it back together for fun. No computers needed!

But Rover ARE the manufacturers! Usually these specialists are very helpful; sorry my idea didn't work. I don't think that Rover make the injection system themselves, even if they make the engine. Perhaps a Rover dealer or expert could help out with information on this?

What happened to mechanics
They're called technicians nowadays.
Similar to refuse operatives once being called bin men.
Same job, just a different boiler suit!!

My brother used to be a VW mechanic, but he's not doing it anymore because he didn't like the way that his job was going:
Instead of diagnosing the problem himself, he simply plugged the car into the computer. Instead of repairing a part, he simply replaced the part.
Because of the boredom that this brought about, he jacked it all in and is now a walnut farmer in Australia!!!!

I worked as a motorcycle "mechanic" for 17 years,we use to mend things then,I have a friend who is still in the trade, they don't mend anymore, they replace. The touble is these days they are "fitters" and not "mechanics"

Main dealer computer wont pick up any fault unless it happens while testing, the ecu does not have a memory.so any fault is not logged,ps which 420 are we talking about, tourer or newer shape?.but apart from that suggests inlet manifold leak to ecu ie MAP sensor, that at the moment is a guess
