Hi,
Today I went to Edinburgh for the first time. I ended up at a traffic junction where there were 3 lanes. 1 to left, 2nd to go straight, 3rd to go straight and right.
When I entered the junction the signal was red and I was in the left lane so I stopped. However, after a minute or two I saw the Green Straight Arrow (For going straight). So obviously the cars to my right started moving . At this stage I also moved a bit front (crossed the signal) to turn left, however immediately I realised that pedestrians were crossing in the road I wanted to join so I stopped (After crossing my light and before joining the left road). I also noticed that vehicle behind me did not move past the traffic light at that stage.
This was in heart of Edinburgh, I am sure there must plenty of cameras out there. In the above situation, do you think I might have been captured on camera ? The worst bit it was so confusing and now I am so worried about the incident.
Thanks

Do you have or do you know anyone with a portable satnav? They have 'places of interest' on them inc speed cameras and traffic light cameras. You could set up a demonstration journey on the satnav to go through that junction..and it would tell you whether or not there's a camera at that site.

Surely it would be easier if the OP knew which junction it was to check for cameras on google street view?
|
When I ever I have made threads like this the general opinion seems to be that the camera has to catch you going through the first line and then the second line (e.g clearing the junction) while the camera is on red. So if you move forward and go through the line if you then stop you should be ok. It is still an offence but there is leeway in the system so that the cameras only catch the people who have gone through on purpose.

one of my mates stopped at one of these traffic lights with his front wheels on the metal pick-up section (in the road).
the camera was continuously flashing so he reversed back a little and the camera stopped flashing.
He never got a ticket.
I would imagine there has to be some sort of leniency regarding these stupid things.
So don't sweat as technically you haven't gone over (I think the whole car has to go over the metal pick-up in the road)

Wonder if he stayed there long enough it would either have used up all the film, or hard drive memory?
Bet the person who looked at the results after had a bit of a surprise... 30 identical photos of the same car, sir?

b308, I had wondered that as well
I am not too sure what the Uk uses for film (digital on a hard drive or trusty 35mm film) but at a previous company I worked for we sold a load of UDO drives (bit like Blu ray drives) to the Romanian government for installations in their speed cameras.

Ok, I think I found the street where the incident happened. Thanks for the tip the link to the exact spot where this happened.

From here, I was turning left, when the signal was showing only a straight arrow. But I stopped after crossing the line(in full) and before actually turning left.
I dont know how to make if a speed camera is present. I see something which looks like a camera but not sure whether it is just monitoring or actual speed camera.
Thanks

I can't see a camera anywhere, where do you see one or maybe one?
|
If zoom in on the signals, you wil see a small white thing on top of the signal. [ Probably it is not a camera, but you see that on almost on signals these days ]
|
Blimey, you've got good eyesight.
Don't know what that is. Traffic Light cameras are normally in great big grey boxes.
|
A light to illuminate the junction for pedestrians at night?
|
|
I've also looked at the Streetview and can't see anything that looks like a camera to me.
I think the box on top of the traffic signal just monitors traffic to control the timing and sequencing. And maybe to give priority to approaching buses.
Don't Worry.
|
The boxes on the lights just monitor traffic flow, they don't take pictures of your car.
However you can clearly see the CCTV cameras in the lamp posts but they are not looking out for things like what you did, they are there for serious accidents/street crime etc.

I know this junction well and am not aware of any traffic light cameras on it. My normal direction of travel is to exit the road on the right (Morrison Street) and turn right into Lothian road.

I have reread the OP and turning right is mentioned, I hope not, Morrison Street is one way towards the junction! From your description it sounds as if you were exiting Morrison Street, Still no cameras though.

I think I am a bit relaxed now. (I think I might be wrong in my OP that a right turn was also available , probably that was for straigt )
Also surprisingly, when I saw the green straight Arrow sign ( I dont remember seeing a red sign (to block from turning left) ), however clearly the bus behind me did'nt cross the line and also pedestrians were walking on the left road.
So either the red light (to prevent left) was not working, or I just don't remember in the chaos.:-)

As general info :-
The Edinburgh tram works are causing traffic chaos in the central area, I now use public transport (wash your mouth out) to access the centre of the town.
