Rattle from rear - nelly1
I have a 2002 passat and there is rattle coming from the rear which loud and irritating. When i touch the brake it stops. I have had the types off and checked but everthing seems ok. The noise only occures when the car is moving.

I had a similar tinny rattle on my 2003 Passat, only happened when rolling and usually only on bumpy roads. It used to stop when I braked.

I believe it's the thin metal shield / stone guard around the brake disks rattling against the caliper. I never managed to fix it.

The inelegantly designed Girling calipers on the back of the Passat/Superb have preloading springs fitted to each pad - put there to prevent rattle.

Due to poor design, it's possible for an expert to fit the pads such that one end of a preloading spring pokes through the "window" in the caliper bracket rather than resting on the ledge inside where it can do its job.

If you take the wheels off, an improperly fitted pad will be obvious. The rattle is quite distinctive - and irritating. The pads can be re assembled correctly if the springs are undamaged but locking fluid will be required for the slider pin bolts. A VW dealer was responsible in this instance...

To be honest, unless they are nearly new, the pads are only £9 from buypartsby.com etc... so you may as well just replace them and pay particular attention to their fitting. As said it is a common problem.

I thought Rattle had hit you from behind based on the thread title because his new brake pads still haven't bedded in...:-)
