Skoda recommends oil changes at 20,000 miles. Any comments?

I'm not mechanically minded but there are a wealth of posts here which suggest that 20k is way too long. Having weighed up all the advice here I am now changing oil every 5 - 7k miles (about 50/50 motorway/urban). It isn't an expensive thing to do, and the experts here suggest that it is the one thing that will truly prolong your engine life.
One more time...Kwik Fit do a very reasonably priced oil/filter change. (Mobil 1 for £34, other much cheaper)

Smokie's absolutely right. But does that 20,000 miles not have a qualification of 'or every year whichever comes first' or similar? So many people just look at the mileage figure and ignore a time limitation, which is designed to compensate for the duty cycle of the car.

Still not often enough.
The oil that came out of the rover after 11 months and 12k miles was shot. (Castrol GTX 10W40)
Badly carbonised and lifeless.
The oil that comes out of the Divvy after 2k is still red. [1]
You need to change evey 6k *almost* regardless of mileage. (If you're doing 10k in 6 months you're not doing the school run; if you're doint 3k in 6 months you are. IYKWIM)
[1] Hey can I put the old DIvvy bike oil in my c*r? (Wet clutch/dry clutch)

I'd agree with what you say, although I believe you meant to say change every 6 *months* regardless of mileage.
I was just commenting that it's rare for any vehicle to have only a specified mileage change interval, and not a time qualification on it. It's this time qualification that so many owners neglect. It does , as you say, compensate for the streeses of short journey use.

1 - Castrol GTX is mineral oil IIRC. Synthetics can survive much longer. I would be surprised if the Skoda oil isn't at least semi-synthetic.
2 - You admit to thoroughly abusing your poor old Rover's engine
So, wouldn't you expect the oil to have had it after this time? Does this mean that everyone needs to change their oil every 6 months?
Not necessarily I suggest.
But I still change mine every 5000 miles, because it's a cheap job and I have mechanical sympathy.
