99 4.7 Brake binding problem, help!!!!!!!!!!!! - welshpear
Hi guys. I've got a 99 Jeep grand cherokee 4.7 automatic. I have recently have had no end of bother with the binding brake on both of front brakes.

It seems ok once you start off everday but it gradually starts to get worse the further that you drive. After driving a couple of miles the caliper is red hot, and it's stuck on.

The problem strated around a week ago with only passenger side brake and we've now had problems on both sides.

The local garage said it MUST be brake servo problem and ask me to get it changed. However, the quot price is £400+.

My question is: what could cause such problem? Is really gonna be the brake servo? or something else?

Thanks

First thing to check are the calipers for sticking pistons. The pads need to come out and the pistons pressed back in then pump out with a peice of pad backing plate inserted to stop then from popping out. Then eased back in one at a time to see if any of them are binding. At 10 years old they could probable do with a rebuild kit if they do one. Regards Peter

Hi
Most likely the calipers them selves it it still has the original ones on. They did suffer from this and there are modified calipers released under a Technical service bulletin. the kit you get 2 calipers+pads and works out cheaper. Unlikely the servo.

I had very juddery front brakes

was told I needed new discs by a garage how did not know about the caliper issue , and as my calipers were the originals , so got the modified ones, with new set of discs and pads , ( off ebay) and got them fitted by a local garage

now all is good.

Still have the old discs ( not sure if they would fit back if needed) or if shot anyway

does the brake pedal become firmer as the car warms up. An easy way to check would be to drive untill the brakes are starting to bind & if someone experienced slackens iether a bleed nipple or a brake pipe & there is slight prssure build up & the brakes release this would indicate mastercylinder/servo related fault. You could have a pair of failing brake hoses or just siezeing up calipers.

yours isn't fitted with an anti-creep brake solonoid is it? These solonoids keep a little pressure on the front brakes when stationary to stop an auto from creeping untill the throttle pedal is touched, only applicable if a car is fitted with anti-creep ( only autos)

Can anyone help I seem to have a very similar/same problem. I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and have just had new brake pads all round. Since then I have had a binding problem that started on the front drivers side but now seems to be all around the car. Its been back to the nmechanic twice and he doesnt seem to have a clue... Seems to happen more when im in built up traffic rather than motorway driving but the result is smoking tyres and very hot discs. Desperate for help!!!!

Hi Bullittwig,

I have the exact same problem as you, i had a garage replace pads all round and just the front discs.....soon after my near side rear pads are sticking on....so the wheel get red hot to the point it starts smoking. It's been back to the garage....they can't find anything wrong with it......did you resolve what was causing yours?
