My partners '02 1.7Dti Astra LS is showing the dashboard engine management light- its not due a servce, there seems to be nothing wrong with the engine (no problems with engine running and no unusual noises) .
The strange thing is that the light goes out when braking to a stop.

Any ideas what this could be?

Thanks

If it was due a service, then the word "InSP" would briefly appear in the odometer display when you first turn the key.

Which light is being displayed? Is it the car/spanner light (this is the engine electronics, immobiliser, and autobox fault light) or the engine block with the lightning strike in the middle (this is the emissions fault light)

Either way, you need to have the fault code(s) read out. It could be any number of things, and guesswork isn't a reliable method of fault finding.

Thanks for the reply Dave,

Sorry its taken a while to get back I've had exams to content with!!

Definately not a service light as no "InSP" on the odometer.

It is the car/spanner light that lights up after the car has started (lights up on ignition then goes out and then lights up and stays on).

I understand what you are saying regarding needing the fault codes but before it goes into the garage (it needs its cam belt doing anyway), can you speculate has to what it may be- something that causes the light to go out when braking to a stop but no other symptoms in the performance of the engine.

The reason I ask is (call me suspicious but one bitten) I always like to have an idea of what the garage needs to do before the car goes in!!!

I used to have an astra SXI DTi that lost its airflow intake and therefore the engine management kicked it- on this occasion there was definately a variation in the car perfomance when this happened!!!

Thanks!!

I wouldn't like to hazzard a guess. There is a DIY method of reading out fault codes - brake and throttle pedal to the floor then turn on the ignition (but DON'T start the engine). If it works then the car/spanner light will blink the code(s)

Note, this doesn't work on all Vauxhalls for some reason.

Thanks for all the replies- some useful info there for future use...

HOWEVER.....

As with a lot of things- simple solution-

Brake lights and one dipped headlight had blown!!!!! (and apparently had been blown for a while, ahem, as said not my car!!)

New Bulbs = no dashboard light

Strange it does not mention this in the handbook as its a useful feature!!!

Regards to all

Now onto my post for cost of cam belt...

Brake lights and one dipped headlight had blown!!!!!

Usually it's the ABS light that comes on if the brake light bulbs have blown. That is only the case if the vehicle has ABS fitted though.

Glad you got it sorted (well mostly anyway)

It's worth checking the easy things first - the glowplugs!

You should be able to pull off at least 3 of the connectors, and to earth they shouldn't read more than an ohm or so on a multimeter.

Make sure you get genuine item if you have to replace them.

I'm going to eat my own words here, because it happened to my girlfriend's Corsa 1.7Di when on holiday recently.

Cause was two blown brake light bulbs, reporting the code P0571 Brake Switch Circuit Open.

A call on a local Land Rover specialist, and a £2.50 donation in his charity box later, we were back on our way.
