06 1.6 Air conditioning appears to have packed up - edders
The air-con on the wife's Focus appears to have packed up. The light on the switch says it's on but it plainly isn't. She keeps it permanently on low all year (to avoid seals drying out) but has only noticed it not working during the recent warm weather. I've checked the fuse box and that seems ok. No leaks or strange noises / underside damage etc.. Hasn't been involved in any bangs bumps etc.. Just no cold air ! Any ideas ?

Just had an air-con guy check out the gassing - no problem, fully-gassed and no leaks. He said it has to be electrical but he can't look at it for diagnosis for another 10 days. Anyone got any idea where I might start to look myself ? Thanks.

Take a close look at the large connector that runs to the engine cooling fan, usually clipped up behind the nearside headlight. There are 2 very large wires and 1 small wire(blue colour).Give this wire a gentle tug and you may find it breaks off the connector block(rotted/corroded).If it has ,then a new piece of wiring will need to be attached across the connector.hth

Did the air con guy empty and then refill with new gas ? The Focus II air con usually needs a regas every 2 to 4 years depending on usage. My Focus II air con also failed, I had it completely regassed (fresh stuff throughout) last week and it's working fine now.

When the air con is initially switched on you should hear a slight clonk and/or hiss a few seconds later followed by cool air a few seconds afterwards, if you don't then the gas is past it's sell by date.

The gas doesn't degrade or decompose with time or use inside an AC system, it simply leaks away.
