Hi,

Today I noticed a car advertised for sale parked in my village.

I'll spare you the details, suffice to say its 55' Plate, 80k miles and the owner budged £200 off the sale price to £4k when its really worth £6000ish.

Just to make it clear, no money has been exchanged and I have agreed to pick it up from her house tomorrow.

I have performed a HPI check which is clear and the last 4 digits of the VIN match up fine. Also the car has full main dealer history which I will confirm with the garage in the morning.

The car is in fantastic condition, just been serviced and has been taxed this week 18 miles away from where the seller lives.

Now here's where it gets interesting...

a) The seller came all the way from where they live (not a great area, slightly rough - 10 miles away) to my village to sell because "where I come people don't have this sort of money"

b) The seller wants to sell this bargain priced car desirable car, only to buy a bog standard £1800 Focus - seller demonstrated knowledge of Focus market value, yet seems oblivious to the market value of the car she and her partner are selling to me.. ?

c) Allegedly the seller is selling the car after just 4 weeks taking it as part exchange with cash on a another car they sold. As such there is no V5, but only the new keepers supplement which has been partially filled then tip-exed out.

d) Seller drove all the way over to meet me from her home to accompany me to inspect the car she left in my village, although she came prepared with driving license and a birth certificate which all seemed legit. Is this odd ?

So basically, too good to be true. ?

I was wondering whether it was worth the risk with a HPI check with a £5000 guarantee just in case ?

Thanks

I'd HPI, have it MOT'd and RAC/AA inspected before handing over any monies. At least then you have only lost a few £100's - not 4k.

Too many 'have the shirt off your back as soon as look at you' people out there today.

Going through my own quandry at the moment - see separate thread - Help - Non standard registration.

People do sell cars cheaply for their own reasons however you're right to be suspicious - I certainly am in my situation.

To me your situation sounds dodgy and I would walk away - can you afford to lose the money etc etc ?

Best of luck whatever the outcome.

Something is not right here. The V5 situation sounds especially dodgy.

Personally I would run a mile.

I would trust your instinct here - you clearly have doubts, hence the posting

Cheers all

Steve - just read your thread, it all seems ok to me. Theres plenty of English cars in N.I and they don't seem to mind !

I have an mk1 MX5 - its great, enjoy !

You have just typed all the biggest known scams in the book iny our first post. AVOID this like the plaque.
Cheap Car - Suspicious - Hamsafar
Well know scam, which is often cited in articles or on TV.
Who would sell a car without first getting the V5?
Cheap Car - Suspicious - bell boy
rattles on the ball
to me son to me
Cheap Car - Suspicious - Rattle
Yep

1) The fact he has come to you, never ever buy a car unless the name and address of the house you go to is on the V5.

2) The tippex I cannot think of a genuine reason why you would need to use it. If you make a mistake cross it out.

3) The cheap price. Twice in the past I bought cheap cars and thought I got a bargain, within a few weeks of ownership I soon found why they were so cheap!

"Too good to be true ?"

So bad its got to be a lie.
Cheap Car - Suspicious - bell boy
tippex is a traders dodge rattle
it means the cars been in the trade a while and been through many hands, probably got loads of parking tickets ,speeding tickets ,flagged on apr and also probably done a job,it will have interest from at least 2 police forces and to top it all the slip has already been used to tax it previously and should be stamped by the post office as such if they were on the ball
theres only one reason you would buy this car and i posted it earlier today on another thread
greed
buy it and not only are you furthering crime but you will probably get all the windows smashed or worse the car will be stolen off you in 6 weeks time by the guys who sold it to you

wow i feel better now for saying all that

Walk away? All the info provided makes me think there are possibly problems and therefore not worth the hastle. The driving over to meet you and the car also sounds a little strange.

How much cheaper is this car than other examples?
Cheap Car - Suspicious - dickybow
Its a minimun 2k cheaper than the next cheapest on Autotrader.

Again, thanks guys - I'll give it a miss.

I wouldn't touch this one either. As BB says, you won't have it long. They will know your address and will have kept a key......goodbye to new car.

Happened twice in our road, slightly different circumstances.....Honda and a Nove SR went in the night not long after servicing at main dealers. Easy, Employee knows where the car lives, has a key cut in lunch break and bides his time. His rusty old Nova becomes a nice newer SR.

Walk away

I don't doubt there is something amiss here - but should the OP let the Old Bill know? They can then carry out a sting and catch the perps. (Or have I been watching too much TV again?)

Exactly the same word perfect question posed on Pistoheads by ' Nathan '
Must be a spate of them...look at his replies...much the same as here.

I don't think anyone else has mentioned it but the HPI guarantee is only valid if you buy from at the RK's address and it matches the V5. You also have, I think, to pay by cheque - certainly cash transactions aren't covered.
