You know, `your mates` all had one and they were a fixture on most cars blasting up and down the Motorways.
What happened to them? Did they all toss them in the bin when they became illegal, or are they still there, perhaps hiding inside crisp bags on the dash? Or even coming out `naked` at night when no one can see into the cab.

Some say the bleeps and flashing lights were fun - as well as knowing which camera in the city had the actual camera in it. (Yes they are still seen swapping it around here)

My mate has one in the cupboard he says. I told him to leave it there as likely there was a draconian detector detector out there on the mean streets..

Hoola Hoops were around for years... What happened to the detectors and how can a detector be detected by a detector........

I still use my Inforad regularly. I'm surprised it didn't wear out last weekend when I drove through Luton. Truvelo city or what?

Mine's in the car but hasn't been plugged in for ages. Beeps every time I go past a motorway service station. when it's plugged in, that is!

I had one years ago, the novelty wore off after a week - 90% of beeps were false alarms caused by proximity sensors on shops, traffic lights etc... or spillage from cameras on adjacent carriage-ways, couple that with the fact that 90% of cameras around here are SPECS and it becomes useless.

Truvelo forward facing cameras use sensors in the road and do not transmit any detectible RF. Regards Peter

I was joking a little, of course, in approach with the first post, but about a month ago I accidentally went through a speed camera at around 38mph.

Fortunately I think it was one of the many around here with no actual camera in. However if i`d had the old laser radar detector on the dash, it would have bleeped to alert me and saved an uncomfortable couple of weeks.
But are these old type devices still legal to use?

Apparently under legislative preparation to ban them in the UK (banned in most other EU countries) according to HJ:

My inforad uses GPS so doesn't need to detect any RF. It's a bit like a simplified sat nav system in that only has one point of interest stored - that being a database of speed cameras. In short, it knows where it is in relation to where the cameras are.

Dont need one. I have my TomTom with the Pocket GPS database on it, giving me all the warnings of mobile areas, and fixed cameras, all with different computer voices telling me what camera it is and what the speed limit is. Coupled to a keen mk1 eyeball I have just completed a three year period of 9 points (from the "bus" incident) without being flashed for speeding at with no mimsing crawling along either.

it won't warn of you the one outside the pub I was eating in recently which was only there for an hour, nor the one set up entering the village I live in, which, similarly, was only there for an hour. By the time the Mk 1 eyeball has seen the speed camera it has also seen you and noted your speed. You've been careful / lucky.

I more or less stick to the rules these days. Used to drive like witch on fire but can't seem to be bothered now. My licence is too important to me to risk it. It is less stressful if crushingly boring but in reality it doesn't make a huge difference to journey times. I just put my favvourite radio stations on, open the sunroof if it's a nice day and pootle along at non-licence threatening speeds. It's OK-ish.

If they have set them up there before - yes it will.

> You've been careful / lucky

Carefull yes. Anywhere that looks suss camera wise I travel through it at an actual
Speedlimit +10%. For example in a 30mph limit my sat nav says 33mph my speedo is about 37. Thats sensible driving and making progress. No Luck.

Anyway I got the old detector out and set of for town to try it out again - first time in four years. (it`s one of those mirror jobs)

It used to bleep once on entering the city - but today it bleeped like crazy going past the Police station and towards one of those dark domed city street cameras down the road from it. What`s special about that particular one? its not a speed camera?

Beyond that frenzy of beeps there was almost constant low level beeps in built up areas.

Then on the 6 or so double speed camera set ups out of the city - nothing. Coming back in again on the other route, nothing on the first set - then three sets all active in a cluster - then all dud beyond that.

The Bleeps drove me crazy...Its back in it`s box.
