00 - Auto gearbox fault on - decisions - Pondlife
I've got a 2000 (X-reg) Jaguar S-Type 3.0 Auto SE, which has developed a gearbox fault - cannot select 4th or 5th gear. It's still drivable around town, but maybe the gearbox will fail totally soon.

I'm going to take it to the local auto gearbox place tomorrow. It's possible it will be a cheap fix, but I doubt it. I won't be surprised if it's a new gearbox, and given that the car is probably worth 2K max, I think that would be throwing good money after bad.

Assuming the gearbox is knackered and I don't want to pay for a reconditioned one, which I guess will be 1-2K, what are the options for disposal? Would anyone pay, say, 500 for it or is it just scrap value?

Before anyone mentions it, I don't want to pay someone to torch it or anything else illegal or immoral. But I must admit I have considered getting the "check engine" light reset and driving it (slowly) in for PX and hoping they don't notice :-)

There is an association of auto gearbox repairers who follow a code of practice, i'll try to find the link, unless anyone else knows to whom i refer.

I'm not saying the local place you are intending to visit is in any way bad, but some repairers have a certain 'reputation' and are best avoided.
If you tell us your home area someone may be able to help.

If the rest of the car is in good condition and has been well maintained and you still like it, i'd be inclined to get it repaired..a nice motor and the right year to avoid the forthcoming VED increases.
Who knows the next car you get could be on the blink in no time..better the devil etc.

Maybe worth a search for a used box if the present one's dead?

When I p/exed my manual 52-reg Focus, the Ford dealer didn't bother to drive it because 'we're only going to send it to auction'.

All the gears did work, but it seems to me it wouldn't have mattered if 4th and 5th had not.

There's nothing to stop you p/exing the Jag, although if it were me, I would point out to the garage it has a gearbox fault.

i agree with gb
i would also consider a scrapper box out of a smashed motor from a reliable local breaker if you can source one
i would expect to pay about $350 to $400 plus fitting

Thanks for the idea of a gearbox from a breakers - I'd not thought of that. I've seen jag gearboxes on eBay for around GBP 500 for gearbox + torque converter, so that's a possibility.

Any guidance on how big a job it is for a mechanic to fit an auto gearbox? 4 hours? 8 hours?

Mate of mine bought a 3.0ltr Sport X or S type of about same vintage - very nice car then his Auto box packed up - he had oil changed then a solenoid - in end it was a box strip and £1200 - he is keeping it but is a bit pee'd off - said car was too good to get rid of now.

Update: I took it into an automatic gearbox specialist who read the fault code (P0795 - Pressure control solenoid "C"). He quoted GBP 210+VAT for the solenoid pack and estimated a couple of hours labour (no need to take the transmission off).

I asked him to also take the valve body off in case there was a broken spring - some people on a jag forum suggested that this might be the problem.

End result is that it's working again, and the total bill was around GBP 350+VAT. Not too bad, and nowhere near as bad as I had feared.

Glad you had a result there PL, and thanks for taking the trouble to update us all.

I have just found this site so was particularly pleased to see your experience with the gearbox as it confirms my guess and re-assures me that I'm not into spending a lot of cash. Thanks for posting the update.

My garage gave me a similar quote to yours but last time it happened it turned out to be muck and water in the sensor connector plug. If I could find it I'd give it a look before I hand it over for a new part.

Anyone know where it is ? I'm assuming it will be visible once I get underneath.

Cheers
