Master - 96 2.5 too much oil- no engine start - sawl
Dear All,
recently I put too much oil in the engine of my Renault Master 1996, 2.5 diesel minibus (110,000 miles). At the MOT check when at high revs the van started chucking out black smoke, when the tester turned off the ignition, the engine still ran. Looks like oil got sucked up into the fuel system. The RAC repair man drained the oil out and the van went through the MOT ok. Now, the van is very difficult to start in the mornings. It takes about 2 minutes of turning over the engine and then it starts with a puff of black smoke. When started, it is fine throughout the day. Just a little more sound than normal (slight knocking). Halfords auto shop told me to drain the fuel, change the diesel filter and flush the system (not sure how). This morning, I cannot start the engine and the battery is slowly dying. Have I totalled the engine? What is my best move now? Thanks for any advice, Matt

Oil has not entered the fuel system it has entered the air intake. The air filter may be clogged depending oh how your breather system is configured. The starting problem may be due to glow plug failures so they need testing. The knocking noise does not sound good at you may have hydraulically locked a cylinder when it ingested the oil and bent a conrod. Is the head gasket intact. Regards Peter

Hi Peter, thanks for the reply, I got the glow plugs changed last year so they should be ok. I'll check the air filter. How do I check the head gasket, whereabouts is it ? Thanks, Matt

I checked the air filter and it is clean and there's no gunk/oil in there or anything. When I turn over the engine it's getting weaker and quite a bit of smoke comes out from the exhaust. Cheers, Matt

When it ran after the RAC visit did it overheat or expell coolant out of the header tank. You may have popped the gasket between two cylinders, a comprssion test may reveal a problem. Regards Peter

When the RAC came the engine ran fine. No overheating, it was fine. Sorry, where is the header tank? Thanks, Matt

Take it to a garage.

Header Tank is where you put the coolant, under the bonnet, Head Gasket is in between the cylinder head (top of engine) and the cylinder block (bottom of engine).
None starting could be down to anything, Glow plugs may be faulty, maybe a split in fuel leak off pipes, fuel filter could be blocked!
If you don't know a lot about where things are you are definetly better off taking it to a garage!

I also suspect your intercooler will be half full of oil. Regards Peter

Dear All

I too made the same mistake as Matt. I have 2.0 Litre Mazda 6 Diesel 2004 car. Recently the engine oil lights came on i added too much engine oil almost upto half way mark on dip stick..the engine oil light stayed on for another 20miles or so. I drove the car for about a 1000miles the following week. Had to push start the car last time i drove.

Now the car won't start, though it drove alright even till the last mile. I had to get it towed to a mazda garage nearby. The garage has not come back to me on whats wrong.

Any idea what could go wrong why the car won't start. Can this be fixed? What could be an estimated repair bill.

Any replies/advice would be a big help.

Cheers
A

Was the warning for low oil level or low oil pressure (was the light yellow or red)?

Hi David/All

Apologies for a late reply. Yes the engine oil light did come on. and it stayed on for about next 50miles or so. Then it went off.

The garage Perrys mazda, Huddersfield came back to me (Back in June/early july09)and said it was alright...the extra oil was drained off and the extra oil did not seem to have done much damage.

However since the check engine light was on...and the error codes pointed to a EGR Valve fault Perry's recommended I get a new EGR valve fitted. Spent 400GBP with them. Car worked fine for barely 2 weeks. The car wud just not start after that...it had to be push started. Got stuck on top of Malhalm Cove imagine.

Called up Perrys...they said go to Feather Diesel copany in Halifax. Perrys now seemed thing this is a fuel pump issue. I went there... Got the car fixed for about 325GBP. The car had been running fine for 2 months since then.

But now today the engine makes a loud whine when trying to accelerate. The car is again booked with Perrys in Huddersfield. Not sure how much more I need to spend to make this car work.

My suggestion to all you readers, stay away from Mazda cars...they are nothing but nuisance. I hve owned my 04 Mazda 6 with Full service history for 3 months and its just going in and out of Garage all the time. ZERO reliability. Please donate money to charity if you are feeling rich....But do not waste it on a mazda.

...will keep you posted with how much it costs this time.

Regards
Kaimal

Hang on a mo Kaimal, let me get this right.

You presumably allowed the engine oil on your car to get so low that the oil light came on.
You then overfilled it goodness knows how much...half way up the dipstick, the mind boggles.

You drove the car for umpteen miles with the oil light still on.

The car isn't perfect any more....let me think....i give up.

Hi Gordon

Thanks for a reply. You are right that i made a mistake without realizing what could go wrong. This is my first car ever. I am sharing this information so that others can learn from my mistake.

But my car has now done about 4000miles after that mistake and i got a main dealer garage and another engine specialist to check my car for any possible problem. They both said the extra oil does not seem to have done any damage. The extra whining noise from the car is from the turbo...refurbished turbo fitted about 4 months back.

To be honest I have taken my car to 3 mechanics all confirmed that turbo is making some noise engine is fine. i need to hopefully get that sorted and carry on.

Regards
Anup
