1999 1.9tdi Front Wheel Alignment Setting Needed - Simon
Can anyone lay their hands on the correct data for the front wheel alignment (tracking) setting for an Audi A4, 1.9tdi estate, 1999 model?

Thanks in advance.

Also what suspension code? I'm sure that Sports suspension (1BE?) is different.

Setting the toe is not straightforward on these vehicles as there are two adjustments per side - "toe" and "raised toe". The latter sets the track rod end ball pin height in the carrier so that toe under suspension deflection can be set independently of static toe.

It would have been a good idea if the dealers knew what to do with it (there is a special tool) but most of them don't. Consequently it is usually not set at all and merely adjusting the static toe gives uneven tyre wear.

Find a good VAG independent who knows how to set the "raised toe" (ask them).

I haven't looked at the car that closely yet but I wasn't aware that it had adjustment with the track rod end ball pin height. Its not actually my car either, it belongs to a workmate.

At the minute a decent base setting would suffice as the car in question needs tracking up as you can visually see that it is toeing out quite a large amount after the suspension has been all been replaced after a mishap on the nearside. The vehicle isn't fitted with standard wheels either so any exact figure may be compromised with these non standard wheels on it anyway.

As for the engine code or the sports suspension option then I am not sure, but I do recall the guy saying it was the tdi with the red 'i'.

so basically
its had a whack
its had some new bits nailed on
and its got non approved wheels and tyres

i reckon at least two balls of string to do the tracking should suffice, (make sure no knots in string mind)

try parallel and work from there till the tramlining stops

caveat umpar.....

You've about got it bell boy.

The wheels that the guy has put on it are pukka Audi alloys, but they are 17's. It had different again Audi wheels before that weren't standard, I think they were 18's.

I don't need the string, we have access to the proper old fashioned style 'Dunlop' gauges. We just have no data to work from.

The raised toe adjuster is not obvious - there is a bolt screwed into the end of the (parallel) ball pin which enables the height of the pin to be adjusted relative to the knuckle. It's locked with the pinch bolt.

Sophisticated German machinery will not live up to expectations when handled as you describe...
