Never posted tyres, but once bought a set of alloy wheels on eBay. The seller sent them by DHL. Can't remember what it cost.

About 3 or 4 years ago I bought a set of 5 steel wheels with tyres, the guy selling them would have sent them by courier for £30.

Edit: What FT says below is correct, but you may need to goto a main post office to send them.

No reason why not. They're not on the Post Office restricted list. You'll have to wrap them though, so that they don't leave any marks / dirt.

Quite expensive though. If they are 10kg, then the cost is £12.24 for a standard parcel.

Royal Mail Standard Parcels will convey parcels up to 1.5m long and up to 20kg in weight, as long as the combined length and girth of your thing is less than 3m. Should be OK for car tyres! Unsure where you measure the length from, though...

I have used these people for bulky items. Parcel Force collected it from my workplace and delivered in 24hours for about £8 - it was about £25 if I had taken it to the Post Office and sent by Parcel Force! The only thing extra, is that they like the phone number of the recipient.

When Camskill sent the tyres I ordered from them the other day, they used City Link. I don't know what deal they have with them, but it only cost me £2.45 per tyre to have them delivered.
ps, they weren't wrapped either.

Same here - I bought some tyres a couple of years ago from an internet supplier - arrived by City Link unwrapped.

Do you know anyone who works somewhere who has a parcel courier contract?

My wife's company has one and it costs no more than about £5 to send even heavy items almost anywhere in the UK on a next day service.

I think the postie would have a problem putting them through the letter box...:-)

Try ringing round/going online to check out various couriers such as ParcelForce, TNT, DHL, Lynx etc for the best quote.

The Royal Mail Heavyweight parcel service tinyurl.com/cehowj has a weight limit of 3kg. You need to use a courier service such as ParcelForce which is part of the Royal Mail group. www.parcelforce.com/portal/pw/home

Try www.interparcel.com. It's a courier aggregator site and will give prices from various companies. Then phone the courier and ask about what packaging is required

I suspect an attempt at advertising above ... hardly likely to be an attempt at useful advice for the original poster, given that it was in 2009.

But nice to see some old names again.

And I spotted reference to City Link couriers .... and we all know what happened to them - I recall many of the drivers were sacked on Christmas Eve.

Sending car tyres by post. - Stuart Mccloud

Hi KB, a promotion yes, but also some great rates and excellent service thrown in to boot. If it's not of any use to anyone, then that's fine. Just so many carriers offering really poor customer service. We are just trying to improve that situation.

(Edit: what makes you think that your business is so special that it should be entitled to free advertising, while others have to pay for it? That sort of arrogance is doubtless linked to poor customer service.)

Posting links on old posts on a forum makes you look dodhy and desperate for work whilst trying to get free advertising

Since it's 2018 and this thread is from 2009

it implies that as a courier you take some 9 years to deliver tyres.

They'd be perished by now.

Sending car tyres by post. - Smileyman

the earlier post links to "xxxx" - a limited company formed in May 2018. Whilst reviewing Companies House I spotted a similarly named company that was dissolved in 2014. All information is in the public domain on Companies House website ....

https://www.gov.uk/get-information-about-a-company

(Apologies, Smileyman - no reflection on you but this pathetic spammer isn't getting any free publicity from us.)

Yet again I've been wasting my time reading through a topic that turns out to be nine years old. Why is it that we have so many old threads resurrected for no real benefit to anyone???

Sending car tyres by post. - Avant

Agreed - no real benefit to anyone, but there is a sub-human species that thinks it will get away with free advertising for its dubious product or service. Not on here it won't.

Atleast he was selling K1tch3ns

Sending car tyres by post. - Smileyman

That's alright, I saw your comment and realised I'd mention the name but could not get to edit myself. It's all there in the public domain for those who look to find.

For those who don't know, whenever dealing with a Limited Company there is a wealth of information to be found, if needed.

I recently got an old engine delivered to my home. Once they realised they need a powered lift and a pallet trolley, it was safely deposited in my garage. They needed a different truck, so delevered a day later.

Well done DHL.
