Clio Auto Warning Light - jg
Hi,

Can anyone help with the following please:

I have a 1992 (K Reg) Renault Clio Automatic. The automatic transmission warning light on the dashboard comes on intermittently, although if the ignition is switched off and the car started again the light will go off (although appears again at any time later). There is no pattern to when the light comes on, it can be almost immediately on starting the car or after any number of miles.

The coolant and gearbox oil have been changed and there is nothing wrong with the gearbox (in that it seems to be changing up and down as expected and the position of the comfort/sports setting swich still retains an impact). The car has been run with the light on with no apparant adverse effect.

Has anyone had a similar experience which would help me to pinpoint the problem?

Thanks,

John

Sorry I've not got an answer for you jg, but I'd be interested to know what the cause is, my transport for the next couple of months is a Clio 1.4RT Auto, very much like yours.....yours isn't grey by any chance?!

I had a 1992 Renault 19 auto.

The auto light came on sometimes (usually just after startup). I had the gearbox refilled with oil, and no more probs after that.

A few things spring to mind:
Did the garage actually re-fill the gearbox with oil?

Is the warning light shared with the ECU warning light (I think the light on the 19 was for both...)

Maybe just a duff connection between the oil level sender switch and the wiring harness?

Still thinking....

What about the gearbox temperature sensor? From what I remember, the manual for my 19 said that if the light comes on after some fast driving, its probable that the gearbox is too hot.

Although you say that the light comes on randomly, again the wiring might be sus.

Well - the garage (non Renault) say that they changed the gearbox oil but I am beginning to have some doubts as to the efficiency of what they did. Changing the oil on the Clio auto gearbox is a complicated procedure, according to the Haynes Manual, and I am wondering whether they did actually empty all the old oil out prior to re-filling of whether they merely removed what they could and then topped it up.

The warning light is shared with the ECU and, according to the handbook, when the light is on all the time "signifies an electrical or electronic incident".

The car does not have to be driven fast for the light to come on.

I have booked the car in with a Renault specialist for an inspection next week but, having read these pages, wondered if this was a known failing of a particular Clio electrical switch or sensor which I could have simply replaced.

When changing the auto box oil on a car (not sure about the Clio specially), much of the oil is likely to remain in the torque convertor. The best that can be done on many cars is to remove the sumps and replace what can be drained, basically diluting the old oil with new until after several changes the oil is almost fresh. I know with the Omega that the oil can only be filled through the drain plug, and it is necessary after filling to drive the car for a short distance and then check and retop up the oil (after it fills up the rest of the box and convertor). Is it possible that the box isnt completely filled? Have it checked again by an independant mechanic, preferably an auto box specialist. Auto boxes are too expensive to take chances with, chances are it might just be the sensor or light but if its not....

S.
