They are selling a "steel and plastic" security device which looks like a baseball bat.

Looks more like a cosh to me.

What's the chance you'd get arrested if you were sub 30 years old and stopped with one of these in the car?

I reckon it probably is legal... as long as it's used for it's intended purpose "Steering lock"
I like the description "a FUN baseball bat shape". Which makes it handy as a weapon I suppose, unless you started waving one about in a threating manner you're probably not going to get any grief from the police.

I carry a full size baseball bat in my boot..... along with a baseball and catchers mitt. If the police were to ask, I like to play baseball in the park.

It's surely all a matter of its purpose and whether it is reasonable for you to be carrying one, in the circumstances.
You can buy handles attached to a length of bicycle chain at Halfords. If you wielded one at a football match you would probably be arrested, but having an oil filter wrench in your tool kit would be entirely reasonable.
Walking into a bank wearing a balaclava and carrying a stillson wrench in both hands would probably trigger a panic, but walk in wearing overalls with the wrench over your shoulder and set to repairing the plumbing and no one would bat an eyelid.

Completely agree. The "handle" does indeed mean the item could lend itself to be used as an offensive weapon. In fact its usability as a steering lock looks unlikely given the design.

I have used steering locks in the past and they looked like a steering lock not dressed up as something else.

Not surprised Tesco are selling them did they not withdraw pole dancing kits from their kids' toy range a few years ago?

Looks very similar to the Autolock I occasionally use- just has a bit more rubber on the end.

Prevention of Crime Act 1953

Any person who without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, the proof whereof shall lie on him, has with him in any public place any offensive weapon shall be guilty of an offence

Offensive weapon:

means any article made or adapted for use for causing injury to the person, OR INTENDED by the person having it with him for such use by him .

So the steering lock is a legitimate article but when it is wielded about by a Chav in an incident of road rage intending to injure then it becomes and offensive weapon.

I used to get turned out in the small hours to some pretty rough areas of Manchester. I used to carry a 2ft length of steel tube with a rubber handgrip. It was attached with tool clips horizontally to the drivers seat support next to the door. I was a lot more confident with it by me in some places I went.......It was only the handle to the trolley jack I kept under the seat. Just a tool... unless purpose changed with circumstances. I suspect the largest Magnalite torches have the same dual function.

made... e.g. sword
adapted... e.g. potato with razor blades in it for throwing at a football match
intended...virtually anything, depends what you say and the circumstances of your possession

so the baseball bat in the boot, with gloves, kids in the car on the way to the park to play ball games...no problem

baseball bat by leg, in car, midnight, you're stopped doing your drug deal....well you've got some explaining to do

mind you the CPS will drop it and/or some Govt guideline somewhere will suggest a non custodial sentence anyway....so fill your boots

In the correct hands an umbrella is a better weapon than a baseball bat.

The technique for defending yourself is to hold it with both hands and thrust it into your assailant (choose something soft and squidgy), and withdraw it quickly - rinse and repeat keeping yourself on the back foot or advance as allowed - with a swinging weapon you get one shot, and if you have multiple assailants you lose.

Even a baseball bat is a better weapon used as a thrusting item than as a swinging club for the same reason - once you've swung, that's your 'shot' over.

Edit: I guess a Skoda Superb or a RR Phantom must be the most 'defensible' car then... ;-)

Leef - oldest 'defence' in the book. Don't count on it, loads of people have lost with that one.

It goes with how you look-bought a pick-axe handle at a market in Bath and spent the next few hours wandering around the shopping centre and in and out of shops-no-one even blinked.Few months later bought an axe in Colchester;again no problems.
