97 1.3 Underseal and waxoil- good idea - Toyota Red
Hello,
My old car is showing underseal wear in the wheel arches, and I am thinking of redoing it. I came across a brand of underseal, and also waxoil for use on other parts of the underside. Does anyone have experience of using such products(especially how to apply for best results), and rate their effectiveness? Or have an opinion on the best brand?

I am keen to keep my eleven-year-old on the road for as long as possible.

Thanks...

I have used waxoil rustproofer, (not underseal) on several cars, but mostly from new, not when they were already old and rusting. I always warm the waxoil up so it sprays more easily and I apply it into the box sections and hard to reach places underneath especially seams and where dampness and salt would linger and cause corrosion. I am convinced it slows down the formation of rust but there will always be some places you cannot get to. Make sure you don't clog up things like fuel tank overflow pipe etc.
As the wheel arches take a pounding from road grit and spray I dont think Waxoyl rustproofer will last too long in this area and so a thicker underseal is required and you will need to brush it on. I never had much success with spray-on underseal, got more on myself than the car and it tends to drip. Beware that if there are bare patches already under the arches, water may have seeped under the surface of the remaining underseal and be doing the damage invisibly.
I like the idea of protecting an older car, but hey it could soon be worth £2k subsidy towards a new one so are you really going to keep it much longer?

Enclosed sections such as the sills are better served by injecting ordinary engine oil, this will then creep into all the joins, waxoil tends to set before its done that, except perhaps in a very hot summer! Waxoil is good for more exposed sections and excellent for nuts and bolts - if you want to get them undone again.

Thanks folks- I think I'll give it a blast.
There is some surface corrosion on the rear suspension parts, but the underside of the shell is clear.
I'll try the engine oil in the sill too, or maybe I'll thin the waxoil with white spirit.

Only my opinion but i prefer Dinitrol Products i find they spread/creep better and last longer.
I think Waxoyl is a bit overrated but better than nothing.

Not sure about engine oil with all the acids etc in it.

I would also agree strongly with miata - Waxoyl in my view is strongly overrated and is a crude and ineffective product. Supertrol (Dinitrol) on the other hand is unexpectedly effective, even under less than ideal conditions.

Although wax based products are not intended as a preparation for further coatings, I have found that with Dinitrol you can apply it to rusty steel, let it dry for a day or two and then cover it with Tetrasyl (sp?) black unsderseal, thinned with a little petrol. I have found this to be a formidably effective combination for exposed areas.

This sort of work is so labour intensive and unpleasant, the use of second rate materials is not worth considering. The remains of my last tin of Waxoyl went in the bin.

Hi All,

Anybody tried Bilt-Hamber's Dynax UB? It isn't on their website but I think is similar to
their Dynax 50 (?) and it is supposedly created for underbody protection.

I don't rate Waxoil either,I find this tinyurl.com/crdoh6 much better.

That link will not go to the right page, click products-maintenance consumables then scroll down to wax seal.

I swear by Supertrol, this even delayed my Renault 4 from rusting for around 7 years, incredible stuff - and it spays far better than other 'well known' products and goes further.
I use t on anything to stop rust- wheel barroes, garden tools etc. cars and motorbikes too.
