Trouble with modded cars is the owners want to add the price of the mods to the sale price, when it should be subtracted.

A tinkered-with Astra is, to my mind, worth less than a standard one.

The seller sounds like they may have grasped this to a point, because they mention the original bits.

Is the car worth more than the finance?

If so, you could presumably subtract the outstanding finance from the sale price and pay it off yourself.

The finance co won't care so long as they get their money.

i have just mailed the dsell asking that if i was to buy could i pay the outstanding amount direct and give him whats left. i await a reply....

"The finance co won't care so long as they get their money"

Probably not, but it's still illegal, AFAIK. You'd have the pay the seller, who would then have to get the finance co. to transfer ownership. I think he's more likely to make off with the money!

JBJ,

There are some odd rules surrounding hire purchase, so you may well be right about it being against the wording of the agreement.

Strictly, I think the seller should clear the finance before selling, because until he's done so, the car is not his to sell.

Having said that, plenty of dealers offer to clear HP when buying your car.

"plenty of dealers offer to clear HP when buying your car"

I hesitate to say that dealers have to be honest (!) but they do like to stay in business.

I don't know all the rules, but eBay and unexpired HP agreements are not happy bedfellows!

I suppose the absolutely correct procedure would be for you to buy the car from the finance company, who would then refund their customer whatever was left after the outstanding balance had been cleared.

Can't see the the ebay 'seller' agreeing to that.

Think I would need more info before I bought any car with outstanding finance.

Think I would need more info before I bought any car with outstanding finance.

That's all the info I would need, it has outstanding finance = I walk away.

Okay if it was something very special maybe I would consider it if I could pay the finance company directly.

Tend to agree, except I think it's possible an honest and straightforward motorist might buy a car on HP and said motorist might want to sell the car before the agreement is finished.

It's also reasonable that said motorist might need some of the proceeds of sale to clear the HP.

After all, if he had loads of ready cash, he probably wouldn't be buying on finance in the first place.

Why would anybody fit a K&N filter? Even if you are that way inclined yourself, I'd look for a car that hasn't been pre-hammered ;-)
would you buy this car - meltonlad
i have never fitted a k&n filter to any car and if i was to get this one then it would be back to standard. ive got a reply from the seller and he wants the cash to go to him so i would never buy it. just what you dont want is a few weeks down the road and the finance company come and take it off ya......

If all the marks will come out with a dose of T-cut why doesn't he just do it and increase its saleability?
I can never understand this. You see 'classic' cars advertised at 50k and 'just needs...'
If it needs it, why hasn't it had it?

I personaly would not touch this with a barge pole. I hate modded cars they are more hassle than its worth. If Vauxhall thought K&N was wonderful they would put them filters on them selves, the same with them massive exhausts with half the time do nothing but actually reduce the engines power.

Generally modded cars are worth less than the original version.

This is the way I look at it:-

Different wheels - why? in many cases this will just upset the speedo readings, cost more to insure, cost morer the rubber etc.

Engine mods - possible insurance probs, possible MOT problems, increase posibility of being stopped by the cops, possible reliability issues.

DVD player head unit - What is the point of those things?

Fat exhaust - is waking the nighbours up supposed to be cool? Nobody thinks you have a Ferrari its a cheap massed produced product of GM designed as a reliable and practical family car, keep it that way.

Interior mods - Again tacky and vile spend your money on servicing instead.

Bodykits - Possible insurance problems, increase chance of being stopped by the plod, extra weight, general tackyness.

Well you did ask for honest opinions :).When you modify a car its your taste not Joe Bloggs this is why their value plumets so much as you limit the market.

Agree with MH here.

Can't believe the number of cars around where the aircon only needs refilling at £40..;)

Fleabay sales patter has to be seen to be believed, i've seen quite a few sellers wanting to shift their cars that are still under finance, wouldn't touch with the bargepole.

"Fleabay sales patter has to be seen to be believed"

Indeed! I find it very hard to take anything seriously where the ad is full of spelling mistakes or written in capitals (usually both). I'm sure there are some honest illiterates out there, but that's not the way to bet!

Isn't the problem that he's trying to sell something which doesn't belong to him?

"Hi buddy, I've just telephoned the finance company to find out the remaining balance and, stone me, it's double what I said it was. Honestly, I just saw the "1" and the rest is a blur. I won't apologise or even appear concilliatory but instead make up words and insult your intelligence horribly."

To be even asking the question "Would you buy this car" is bad enough.

I'd just look out for another Astra. walk away from this one, not worth the hassle. Especially with £1943.82 outstanding!!

would you buy this car - Rattle
Sounds like some chav who has run into financial problems trying to sell property that dosn't belong to him. Seen a lot of cases like this on ebay lately. One that makes me laugh MOT has ran out but will pass easily - then just get it MOT'ed!
