I recently bought a FIAT Punto with a broken head gasket and will be getting this looked at. However, I have been told there is a chance that the cylinder head may be cracked too. :(
When running, the car gives out a lot of white smoke from the exhaust, and the temperature gauge fluctates wildly, and after a while the red overheating light comes on.
How much would I be looking at if the head is cracked? :(

Is it the 1.2 litre 60bhp / 75bhp engine? Failed head gasket is a common problem, it happened on ours too. It's possible the head is cracked but it's usually just the gasket. It's a straightforward job, get the cambelt done at the same time.
You or your repairer should be able to source a good used head from a reclaimers. It's also possible to get the damaged head welded, there are specialist engineering shops will do this for you.
