I have just bought a 106 1.4 diesel with 100k done. I've just done a load of work for the mot and so I want to keep it if possible. However, because of safety issue, I never drove it fast until now.
The thing is that it can only do 75mph maybe 77mph and I think it should do 90mph.
The oil and water seem clean. I've drained the fuel filter and tried again with the air box off. It starts up very well and the engine is very quiet (compared to a 306 1.9d with 165k anyway)
I've got a new fuel filter and air filter in the post. The brakes are not dragging, I've checked each wheel.
Do you have any ideas where I should look next?

If the new air filter is in the post, and the old one is dirty enough, that alone could be the cause although it seems unlikely.

Cars often become gradually more willing when they are driven more energetically. The Italian Tune-Up effect. The exhausts of slowly driven diesels can get quite clogged up with soot too, which may clear with plenty of vigorous (but not extreme) revving.

Opinions seem sharply divided on the usefulness of injector cleaners or fuel system cleaners. My feeling is that with an old high mileage car they may help. People have strong opinions on which ones are good and which ones aren't.

With a 100,000 mile car it is a bad idea to use any but moderate revs until the engine is properly warm, and the oil and filter should be changed often.

....Also change the fuel filter if it hasn't been done recently, that can restrict the fuel flow. When you say its quiet, do you mean quieter than you would normally think it should be? Lacking diesel 'knock' if so the pump timing could be retarded.

I bought the filters on ebay so I'll let you know when they arrive. The engine does seem too quiet, seems more like a petrol engine. It is diesel though. Perhaps my 306 is more tired than I thought.

My son had an L reg 106 1,4D. For the milage you have on yours 75/80 mph isn't bad. This engine isn't a ball of fire. Very economical, though.

The pump also has a maximum RPM adjustment.
This may have been turned down in the past .
Check what the car will rev to in 3rd & see if this is achived in 4th gear.

They tend to get quieter as they wear because the compression lessens. If it starts OK that's a fair indication that the compression is good.

Sorry dieselnut, there is no rpm on this car. I get a nice analog clock instead ;-) No temp gauge either.
I could see if it goes faster in 4th.

To the other poster above: Is the car still economical if it has lost 20% of its power? I mainly bought it for economy...

It depends why it's lost it. If you are having to use high revs and full throttle to get normal performance - yes. The secret of diesel economy is that it will run on a very weak mixture, controlled soley by the throttle position, if you are having to use full throttle you lose that economy

Son's 1,4 diesel is fondly remembered by me for 2 things.

You could read the first part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy while the speedo edged slowly towards 60mph.
It was very economical.

They just are not quick powerfull cars.

The head gasket went on it and he sold it to a mate who has a garage. His mate repaired it and as far as we know it is still running.

If you don't know its history I would suggest a change of coolant, thermostat, water pump and cam belt.

Just this morning I had been driving for 20 miles at a steady 56mph then it started to make a new noise a sort of "wooooooooo". I put clutch in and idled to stop, noise stopped at about 30 mph. I had a quick look around and then set off again after about a mile the same noise, a sort of low whine. Accelerating reduces the noise, braking reduces the noise but it seems to be wheel speed related. It also makes the noise it gear and not in gear but not audible below 30 mph. I am going out to have a look once it is cooled down.

Hmmm, nothing to see. I wonder if the gear box has a broken bearing or something strange like that

Could be a wheel bearing, listen to see if its louder going round a corner in one direction.

Can I just add to the above replies - back in my road testing days I had a 1.4 diesel and found it the most underpowered, sluggish car I had experienced since the side-valve Morris Minor.

Well, I have replaced the fuel filter and air filter now. Seems slower if anything. Still faster than a 1.8 mondeo off the lights but struggles on the motorway. I think I'll go back to my 306.

We have one.
0-60 in c 19 secs.

Drive it hard and it goes well but ball of fire it will never be. When 4 up, and very steep hills, first gear job.

But 50mpg around town...

Did the cambelt. Does 85mph now. Timing must have been wrong.
