I would go along to one of the local auctions on a px night. Buy something unfashionable but reliable. vovlov 340or something?
|
Ramite - I might be able to point you in the direction of a 20 year old Volvo 340, in daily use in Lincolnshire. MOT until August Availibity depends on the seperate sale of a cherished number plate. When do you want a car - please email me (see profile)

I will also follow this thread to save making a new one. Looking for a cheapy car with some life left in it local to Surrey.
|
Look for a 88 era Mitsubishi Colt - nobody loves them cheap as chips and will still be around along with cockroaches when it all goes horribly wrong.

If I was doing this I would go for something like a Lada or a Volvo 340. The reason both are extremely tough and can handle rough roads. That cavalier engine probably has some life in it but the rest of the car is probably had it.
A Volvo 340 is ideal as you can fix it with spanners and it has a very simple leaf spring rear suspension. They are also quite safe (for its era).
I've always wanted to do one of these banger ralies the problem is everybody thinks I am mad! Lets face it when I did have banger I did not exactly get on it with it!
I am not sure a 340 is in budget though as even now they still have a bit of a following I know a 23 year old who loves them to bits and he is an emo.

I like it Oilrag !
Have to admit I had to look "emo" up on wiki. Really must be out of touch I'm afraid.

The event is in early april although i am not taking a place in the car just trying to help out with sponsorship and getting ideas for the car etc.I am gonna pass on all your ideas to the lads doing it.Thanks for the help so far.

If £250 is including the fuel to get there, that will limit your choice of vehicles.
If not i'd go for a Volvo 240 of some sort, doddle to work on most things, even the cam belt pulleys are pre marked and should it break nothing connects.
failing that, Toyota Carina/Camry or if you spot one Nissan Bluebird/early Primera.

Bless you Rattle. He's not driving to Bombay, but to the other side of Europe.
Mk ii Polo. Nothing to go wrong on it... save for having to reset the points.

Bless you too Mappy - it'scalled Mumbai these days :-)

Erm, I thought they were de-Dion tube rear suspension

I like them. If it hasn't come to bits, doesn't burn oil or sound dreadful or pee oil everywhere or have a leaky petrol tank or (various other things).... sigh. I had them for a couple of years, not a diesel, though. I've just looked on e-bay & come over all nostalgic for a year or so ago.

The girls I know of who did the Mongol Rally two years ago, did it in a J reg Micra which they bought for £200 from ebay. They got most of the extras using Freecycle (spare wheels/jerry cans and so on) and a free top box (to hold the spares and supplies for a school in Mongolia!!) from Thule.
If you look at the various sites for the Mongol Rally you will get an idea of the cars they buy - and see which ones did not make it. Bit more extreme than a drive to Gib, so anything that did that well should suit your purpose, I should imagine.
|
Skoda Favorit - around M reg. all the bits that matter are VW, and they go for pennies.
|
Don't forget this is to Gibraltar and not Mongolia :-) A car that will do this might be one that cannot do the Mongol Rally.
And the Mongol Rally would raise more if the drivers just didn't go. Some take expenses out of sponsor money - they allow it! But that is thread drift so sorry.

You could try visiting the larger dealerships in your area and explaining your worthy cause to the sales or service manager.
In return for some "sponsored by J. Bloggs" advertising emblazoned on the car, they might very well furnish you with something more reliable from their 'cheapie stock'.
If you don't ask...... :-)

FIAT Uno or Panda with the 1000cc FIRE engine. It's a great engine that HJ used to rave about (ie lasts for ever and won't blow up if it throws a cambelt). I had an Uno 45 as a first car and found the engine to be a terrific, nippy little thing. The rest of the car not so good.... Doubt if there are many left now.

Don't forget to wave as you pass my home!
