94 2.0d Won't start - benj77
I have a diesal 306 that wont start unless it is bump started via a tow from a mate.

I have replaced all the heater plugs and checked that they are getting current which they are, I have checked the fuel supply to the injector pump and this is fine- obviously as it starts when bump started. I have checked all the fuses are fine and that the heater relay works and it does. It stays on for about 12 seconds when it is very cold at the first turn of the switch then on the second turn stays on for about 5 seconds.

The battery has a full charge.

I was wondering if it could be the fuel cut of solinoid jammed shut but surely it would then not run if it was bump started ? Or if it is an immobilser problem?

Please help as i am at the end of my temper......

When you bump it does it start cleanly straight away. Regards Peter

Yes it starts and drives fine when bump started, u get the usual puff of black smoke but then it is fine after that. As soon as you switch it off thats it, game over . It then dont start again unitll u get another tow......

Could be the solonoid sticking or it could be that you are getting air in the fuel lines when its left standing. Try pumping the primer until it goes hard and then starting it.

I have tried priming the system untill the bulb is hard and starting but still no luck. If the stop solinoid was fualty i.e jammed shut surely it would not start at all ?

I would start by looking at the voltage available to power the immobiliser when the starter is being operated. It could be something like a faulty ignition switch which is failing to connect ignition powered accessories when in the starter position. Citroens had switch problems at around this time I believe.

It needs somebody who is very familiar with that make/model . or possibly Richard W? if he is still around with Citroen knowledge.

Does it have a key pad immobilser or can you see the stop solonoid on the pump?

The stop solonoid is on top of the pump.....I have checked the electrical supply to it and it is fine....!

But is it fine whilst cranking. Regards Peter

I assume this is 'old school' diesel and you do not have a crank sensor talking to the ECU. Regards Peter

It won't be aything nasty Peter its an XUD engine - nice and simple. I would suggest that you unscrew the solonoid and remove the actuator, refit the solonoid and then see if it starts OK. You will have to stall it to stop.

It seems unlikely it's a solenoid problem since it starts and runs with a tug.

What pump is fitted and what has it been run on? What's the cranking speed like? If it's Bosch pumped and run on pump derv, and the cranking speed is OK, I'd be inclinded to whip a plug out and check that it actually gets red hot, crack an injector union and check diesel is getting through when cranking; after that check the cambelt timing, then the valve clearances and a compression check. If it's Lucas pumped and you've been running it on veg oil, then it's entirely possible the pump is shot and not making enough pressure at cranking speed.

I thought perhaps the shock and vibration of towing it was enough to dislodge the solonoid.

Thanks guy's as soon as the weather imroves I will give the things listed a bash then get back to you with an update......

I had another thought... have you tried pumping the primer, will that make it start? If this is a Bosch pump, then even a small leak in the injector leak off pipes can cause starting havoc.

Ok now , I have checked the fuel cut off solenoid and it seems to be working ok (12v when the ignition is off then when u crank it the voltage drops i guess this is correct? )

I have cracked open one of the nuts on the pressure side of the diesal pump and there is a spurt of fuel when the engine is cranked. I have tried pumping the priming bulb while the engine is being cranked but still wont start....Doesn't even try just puffs out unburnt fuel smoke from the exhaust.

However when u tow it , put it into 2nd and dump the clutch it still bursts into life......!

Surely if the compression was low it would not start when bumped and run badly the same as if the timing was out?

12 volts with the engine off sounds very low. What does the battery volts drop to when you crank it? On the balance, sounds like the battery is shot.

OK have now given up hope....does any one have a TD engine that I can replace this one with? would be looking for something with sensible mileage and a good history !

have you tried jump starting it off another car, hopefully this should show up if your battery is dead. it could also possibly be the starter motor pulling to much power.
