Todays's auction report shows that used prices are on the rise but I don't think it shows just how much they have risen in the last few weeks. Before Christmas, most cars were struggling to get near "book". Now, to use some of today's examples at Blackbushe:

S-Type 2.7 D V6, 23k, Glasses: 12050. Sold: 12600 (and this was Grade 5 online which means horrible)
VW Tourag 2.5 TDI, 28k CAP Clean: 15600. Sold: 16300
Honda Accord 2.2d Exec, CAP Clean 3475, Sold: 3500 (these were well under book 1 month ago)
Peugeot 307 HDI, 40k, CAP Clean: 5175, Sold: 5850
Audi A6 TDI, 114k, CAP Clean: 5725, Sold: 6450
VW Bora 1.9 PD 100, 45k, CAP Clean: 4125, Sold: 5150
BMW 525d, 119k, CAP Clean: 7175, Sold: 8050

If this goes on it will filter through quite quickly to retail prices.

Do we know what year the cars are?

Pal of mine bought a Mondeo TDCi 115 estate 54 plate LX with 100k at auction this week for £2300.

Don't know if that was good or not but he's happy enough. It replaces a Passat 130 diesel he sold privately last weekend for the same amount. The VW was a 52 plate with 160k. He bought that seven months ago with 140k for, wait for it £2300. It replaced his 52 plate Mondeo TDCi Ghia estate with 230k which he sold privately for....yep....£2300 in June.

Upshot is he has gone from a 52 Mondeo estate with 230k to a 54 Mondeo estate with 100k and had a "free" Passat for 20k miles in between at no cost. He did nothing to the Passat so his only expenditure was the fuel which he would have needed to buy anyway regardless.

He is a good friend but sometimes I could cheerfully....

Yeah HB, I hate people like that too. How do they do it? Please don't say hard work and talent. If it was that easy we would all be driving discreetly fancy motors.

I think in the case of my cunning friend it's about having the willingness to be bothered. I tend to just keep on with cars so long as they function and then buy another one as and when. He makes a sport out of trying to beat the odds. He's done it for years. Always buying high milers and putting lots of miles on them but changing regularly. He sells privately and buys at auction which I suppose stacks the financial gamble in his favour.

Paradoxically, he could easily fund a more expensive car but sees little point given his high mileage. He tells me that he long ago mentally wrote off his £2k-ish "pot" and is sanguine about the almost inevitability that he will one day buy a lemon.

Mildly irritatingly though, he hasn't had a duff one in ten years or more.

Sounds like you had a great chance to get shot of your redundant Mondy to him, HB?! £2300 is more than you'd expect for it isn't it?!

It was mentioned but didn't come to anything.
