Hi,
I've been to Tyre fitting centres who make an effort to fit all of the wheel centre caps so they are all 'pointing' the same way (eg, text is right way round to be read).
And I notice used cars in a dealers lot all have the centre caps pointing the same way.
But when a car goes round a corner, dont the wheels turn at different rates? so wont the centre caps point in different directions following a bend?
Or do the caps allow the wheels to turn around them (ie the caps dont turn with the wheel) and so do stay pointing the same way?
Thanks for any info.

Yes, yes, no. It must be OCD or coincidence.

One car that does this is the Rolls Royce Phantom if that is relevant?

So do Skodas with alloy wheels
they don't really but I feel they should if only to make up for other things

Friction in the mechanism will prevent the caps from pointing exactly the right way up every time, even on a Rolls Royce.

I would be very impressed if my 98 Mondeo had been displayed that way.
My centre caps have a keyway and only fit when this is aligned with the hub.
I cannot imagine them jacking up the car in the show room to rotate the wheels.:-)

Why? I don't get it.
How can they always be "the right way round to be read" or must one always park so that they are?
Does anyone ever look at the centre caps to read the make of car? Aren't there always bigger badges/styling hints etc to get make of car.
I really really don't get the point - might be the red stuff (blast, didn't read label but it is red and alcoholic - might be French, or Spanish or is it that Italian from the back of the cupboard -no that was Australian or South African)

I know time flies, but it isnt early April yet is it?

I remember a car salesman friend telling me about how Dealer inspectors from BMW would check that all wheel badges were properly horizontal on all showroom cars with the dealer losing out if they weren't. Attention to detail eh!
|
What a waste of time in the whole context of life and the universe ! Do the punters really complain if they point the wrong way ? Seems to me the dealers / inspectors are a bit too much up themselves.

If BMW need to lose some headcount - there's a few candidates then?
I once shared a flat with someone employed by a major/big hotel in Manchester to reduce costs.... a few months later they cut some costs. They made him redundant.

I have said this before but in many dealerships there are little "Hitlers" in the form of sales managers who go out their way to get things done with car displays just because they can and as a sign of power over the sales team. I would not be surprised if they were asked to jack up cars to turn the wheels.
This would be added to their other habits like lining up cars perfectly equidistant ( I have witnessed one sales manager with a length of string making sure they were), the old favourite one wheel up on a ramp (always convinced me to buy the car as a result), the row of boots open etc etc.
GordonBennett must see a whole load of these displays in his travels, maybe even more so now that the sales folk have got nothing else to occupy their time!
