2005 2.2 Air con light suddenly started flashing - cornelly cat
Just this morning - cold but no colder than any others recently, I got into the car, started her up and hit the air con along with the fan and heat settings. Then noticed that the air con light was slowly flashing on and off. Air con seems to be working as it cleared relatively quickly but nothing I could do short of turning off the fans would stop it flashing. can't find anything in the manual about so wondered if anyone on here could help?

**update**
after ringing Honda UK technical line they had no idea so I called in my local dealer. Spoke to chief mechanic who'd never seen anything like it so the car is with them.

Will post an update as soon as they ring - just am hoping it's not the famed CRV compressor issue as the car is only 4 weeks out of warranty

Some compressors are fitted with a rotation sensor that compares compressor speed to engine speed. If it detects a difference it shuts down the compressor as it assumes it's seizing (which it usually is). But I don't remember a Honda being fitted with this system.

Easist way to check to to have someone turnit on while you watch the comressor clutch. If it starts running, then stops and the light flashes, then there's your problem. But you may have trouble getting it to start at all seeing as England is in the 'grip of a severe winter'!

I looked at one of these a few months ago with a similar problem. The a/c light was flashing but the a/c was not functioning.Turned out to be a faulty control panel (switch pack)hth

the flashing light on the a/c fan switch is a self diagnosis feature on the crv,in general terms you normally find that you have a leak of a/c gas somewhere or it will require just a regas, your honda dealer should be able to find out about this very quickly as there is a service bulletin about this very problem !

Just spoke to Honda about this as they've been dragging their heels. Apparently I need a whole new control panel for the heating, air/con system at well over £500 **yikes**. They're in discussion with Honda about whether this can be done under warranty as the car was only 3 weeks out when it happened. Honda UK are now saying probably not as the car only had 2 dealer services in the first three years. Both of those services were booked under my ownership but the first service was missed - ironically enough when Honda owned the car themselves as it came from one of their dealership managers!!

Will post an update as soon as I hear back from Honda but if anyone can point me to a source of the service bulletins on the net would be much appreciated

Hi Cornelly Cat.

I'll be very interested to see your update to this.

I have a Honda CRV 2.2 CDti on a 55 plate, also just out of warranty. Switched car on this morning and had exactly the same problem.

Car is fully honda service, booked stamped etc.. at the correct intervals apart from most recent service which was Honda approved.

Will be speaking with Honda dealer myself in the next few days and I am curious to know if they are identical problems.

regards

Could it be too cold for the aircon to operate correctly?

Hello Cornelly Cat
I believe I have the solution to your problem. I have a 55 plate CRV i-CDTi which had identical symptoms i.e. climate control green light flashing (only off when fan turned off).

This appears to be a self diagnosis feature on the control panel. I took it to a friendly garage who regassed it, although there wasn't too much of a gas pressure drop, but couldn't find a problem or get access to the Honda fault codes.

I discovered that Haynes have now released a manual on the CRV II which confirms the reason for the light @ 3.14 and gives the sequence of how to interrogate the climate control panel;
ignition off/fan switch off/temperature to coldest/air to face vents
ignition on/depress and hold air recirculation button and at same time - within 10 secs - depress rear window&mirror demister button 5 times
recirc button then should blink twice & self diagnosis begin
release buttons and watch carefully recirc button indicator which will blink between 1&15 times if a fault code has been logged
record then switch ignition off to cancel self diagnosis

When I did this the fan cut in and the system seemed to reset - no more blinking light! I believe in the really bitter cold weather (-15 deg C here) a fault had been logged (low gas pressure) which had cleared upon regassing or by rise in temperature and upon diagnosis system found no fault and reset. Result!

Happy button pressing.

To HondaKeith,
You are A Top Bloke, have just gone out in the dark with printed sheet of your instructions and torch, yes it has worked, final test will be in the morning.
Thanks again

Thanks HondaKeith,

I had exactly the same problem on my 05 CRV, this morning, and I found this on the website. I applied it, and it worked. Great.

Thanks

Hi John, we were delighted to find this forum when the same thing happened to our 05 plate 2.2ctdi exec CRV during the extremely cold weather in December/January. We carried out your instructions which worked a treat as we had also been told that we needed a new control panel at £500. It has been fine until the past few days when it started flashing again. we have again carried out the button pressing per your instructions and the light does stop flashing for a while but then comes back on again. Our thinking is that we need it re-gassed but we would welcome any thoughts or advice you can give. Many thanks, Cheers! Garry O'Donnell.

This worked a treat on my 55 plate i-CTDi as well. Thanks again.

Yes, I know its an old post, but on Hondas recommendation Ive changed 2 of these switch modules. Today, I followed this reset instruction and after a Summer with no air con... voila... as good as new. If I had an addy, I'd send you 50 quid. Happy New Year and thank you.

Sorted my problem too. Again, it was very cold day (-5C), A/C light flashing. Reset using method described by Hondakeith, has been fine since. Going to assume that it was low gas pressure due to cold and will get it re-gassed just before summer. After experiencing previous Audi A/C problems this was a major relief to find this solution, big thanks to HondaKeith.
