Hi all

Looking to buy a car for the wife in the next few months.

We test drove a 1.3 Yaris at the weekend. Not too sure about the central digital dash but the Yaris feels much more solid and better-built than the Getz (which we have also driven). SWMBO likes to keep her cars for a long time (10 years) and I just feel that the Yaris will be in a better state in 10 years time than the Getz.

Although we haven't driven one, I think the 1.0 Yaris would be underpowered. I want the T3 or TR spec, as they have loads of airbags, and I think this is important given that my wife will be driving the kids around.

For maximum peace of mind, we want to buy from a Toyota dealer, but, naturally, they are expensive. We're looking at £8k for a 2008 model with 8k miles on. I've checked out 'buyacar' and they have them brand new at £8.5k, so paying £8k for a second-hand one seems silly. But my wife would actually prefer to buy second-hand - so would I but not at that price!!

So to my query. The Toyota dealer we visited wasn't very flexible on price - it looks like their standard discount is about £250. He clearly thinks the car is so good that it will sell itself.

Now I know that car sales have dropped off a cliff recently. Does this also apply to the Yaris? In other words, are there loads of Yarises sitting on an airfield somewhere that eventually Toyota will have to discount to sell off? Or will they just cut production to match supply and demand - and sell any stockpiled Yarises as brand new cars?

If I wait until March, say, what's my chances of getting a 2008 58 plate 1.3 TR/T3 Yaris with minimal miles for closer to £6k from a Toyota dealer? Whatever the answer, I'm thinking waiting until March (or later?) should get me a better deal than they are currently offering.

Any input gratefully received.

I often deliver Toyo's and the Yaris is extremely popular, as are many other low emission good quality cars, C1/107/aygo.
TBH, thats the main type of car we are currently carrying for retail sales. by a long margin.

I don't think Toyota will have to discount this model for a long time not till facelift/model change anyway, and you could probably pick a pre reg Avensis up for only a few pounds more than a new yaris.
Same as a pre reg Vectra is a giveaway compared to corsa.

A friend had Toyota call him several times to see if he wanted to sell his mk1 yaris diesel, such is the demand for them, and judging by the prices i've seen them go for on Ebay the demand is growing if anything.

Your question about fields of Yaris's, i havent seen any, but there could be some over the water i suppose, unlike larger cars of all makes where there are endless rows of them of all makes including the ones who would have you believe otherwise.

For the difference in price i'd go for new, and i too think its one of the best of the supermini's, especially the 1.3.

Depreciation on our 2003 Yaris diesel seems to be £2,000 in first year of ownership (bought s/h at 3 years old) and -£1,000 this year (appreciation)

Hi. Try quoting Toyota's own 'Blue Moon' prices to your dealer:

3 door 1.3 T3 for £8,375 would make it hard to justify £8k for a used version.

try drive the deal.com their quotes seem to be at least £500 below toyota s blue moon prices. they supply from main toyota dealers with 3yrs warranty and tax.Or if you want to use a local toyota dealer print off the quote and ask them to match it. worked before for me. my mother is after a yaris and the 1.3 is the way to go over the 1.0 and not much in the price between the two .good car

drivethedeal prices (no options):

1.3 TR: 3dr £7613, 5dr £8300
1.3 T3: 3dr £7127, 5dr £7814

IIRC TR spec is between T2 and T3, so T3 looks good value

It's hard to predict what will happen to prices in 2009 but the pundits are warning that once the manufacturers start to cut back on production prices could rise by up to 30% for new cars next year; this could have a corresponding effect on used cars. Personally I think it's never been a better time to buy nearly new Toyotas - picked up an Avensis T3x 1.8 demonstrator on an 07 plate with all the extras including climate control from a main T dealer with just 5k miles for just £8.5k. Spotless and still with a 'new car' aroma.

Last year, I casually enquired about a new Avensis and was quoted the list price with a £150 discount for a straight sale; my 2002 Mazda 323TD would have attracted a trade-in value of just £700. Wow, how things have changed!

Suggest you try a Mazda 2 if you have a dealer nearby. It's infinitely better built than the Yaris, nicer to drive and much cheaper. Also check you can live with the crazy boot arrangement if you decide that you do want a Yaris.

You can get £1500 off a T3 or new TR Yaris without really trying these days. Toyota have fields of them to shift before the facelift version with lower emission engines is launched. Some of their dealers are still in never never land as far as pricing is concerned.

And some VW/Ford dealers - walked into a showroom this week with 'cash in hand' asking for a discount on a Polo Match and was quoted the list price and not a penny less. Tried the Ford dealer next door and asked about the new Ka, admiring a gleaming example standing in the showroom. 'Sorry, can't give you a discount as it's just been launched; actually, can't even sell you one yet as it doesn't go on sale until the New Year. Please call back later.....' Didn't even take my number, yet the expensive asvertisement in the newspaper begged me to call in 'because we want to deal!'.

I call them 'Sales Prevention Departments'.

Thanks for all the advice.

Re Mazda 2 - no local dealers.

Bit of a 'left-field' suggestion, but what about a Daihatsu Sirion? I know Daihatsu is a Toyota sub, and the Sirion seems to be based on the Yaris. It scores well in the NCAP tests (but not as well as the Yaris). I think with the Yaris that you are paying a premium for the badge. I guess the Sirion won't be as good, but then it's also cheaper - ~£6.5k for a 2008 plate with very low miles, so at least £1k less than the Yaris.

I'm intending to look at a Sirion tomorrow.

Any views?

I'd prefer the Sirion of the two, nicer looking interior (IMHO) and far more room up front. I'd image it doesn't drive as well and the insurance groups are higher, although the tax on the 1.0 is only £35.

Thanks Carl. Do you know why the insurance group is higher? Not particularly relevant at the mo, as both me and SWMBO have full NCB. But in about 18 months time, my son will start learning to drive, and it looks like the Sirion will be more expensive to insure with him as a driver than the Yaris. Don't see why.

Thanks Carl. Do you know why the insurance group is higher?

The Yaris (and most Toyota's )has very low insurance groups because cheap to repair after a crash. The Sirion isn't the most popular car, most unpopular cars have higher insurance rates.

Further thoughts....

HJ seems quite complimentary about the Sirion in the words in CBC breakdown, but then only gives it 2 stars.

Does anyone know if the 1.0 Sirion engine is actually a Toyota powerplant? Seems a bit quicker in the Sirion.

Do they have a 3 or 5 year warranty? The Daihatsu website refers to 3 years in one place and 5 in another.

What we're looking for is reliability, safety and good build quality - plus a car that will last 10 years! Less bothered about handling, ride, looks etc.

I am told Hyundai have over 400 Getz cars un-registered still for sale in the UK (the i20 is out this month).
Dealers are moving a bit, but the 2 who have been honest are both waiting for Hyundai to lower thier cost back to them (expected any time soon).
If you only wanted the car for 5 years, the Getz would be the cheaper and better option in terms of warranty.
Over 10 years - I would choose Toyota every time.

Thanks for that. The Getz is off the list as it just feels very inferior compared to the Yaris.

Doing some research last night to discover that the Daihatsu Sirion and the Subaru Justy are actually the same car - except that the Justy seems to be better spec'd (eg has curtain airbags and rear sensors both of which we'd like).

Went and test drove a Justy this afternoon and was v. impressed. It felt very solid and I much prefer the dash layout over the Yaris. Like for like, I think the Justy would work out £500 - £1k cheaper than the T3 Yaris. The Justy has a 5 year warranty compared to 3 for the Yaris, but servicing and insurance would be cheaper on the Yaris and there are loads more dealers.

Downsides of the Justy - while the engine seemed to be plenty powerful enough (amazing for a 1 litre), it was noisy and sounded a bit strange a couple of times, while the gearbox felt a bit vague.

Surprisingly, I think I prefer the Justy over the Yaris - got more character and a bit unusual. Will probably put things on hold for a couple of months and see what prices are like in March, then get SWMBO to drive both and see which she prefers.

Any thoughts from anyone who has a Justy (or Sirion)???

A drivethedeal Yaris would be top of my list. Less than £8k for a well specced model when new Fiestas/Jazzes etc are £11-13k makes it a steal.

Sirions/Justy are OK if you don't intend trading them for a good number of years.

stunorthants26 has the Sirion I think - or his girlfriend has anyway. They've only recently got it too.
