Somewhere I recall reading about a cure for this. Did it involve ammonia in a bowl in the car with the system running? Killing the bacteria? Advice please if this rings a bell with anyone. Thanks

Neutradol/oust up the vents - put AC on and keep windows closed run for 30 mins

Just sorted this myself at the weekend. Also set system to recirculate and open all the dashboard vents.
Stay outside vehicle and supervise ! Drank a coffee myself while waiting. Expect car to be pongy for a day or so. Musty smell has now gone.

Very simple. With windows closed ( who'd open them this weather anyway ? ) run the aircon on max heat for 10 mins ( more if you can stand it ) This will kill of the source of the smell.

That's funny. My damp washing smells like old air con!
What about a bowl of white vinegar left in the car overnight. French butchers use it to freshen up their shops (or so I've read).

Tried maximum heat alone first in my Hyundai. Did not work in my Passat either. Hence the Neutradol method.

Often a change of the pollen/air con system filter can solve this. Check the filter out and change if it is very smelly, very old and/or very wet!

Thanks all - one of these should work.
