a brief history, cam belt went and all relevant work was apparently done, car was driven for over a thousand miles with no problems, 1st full tank of deisel about 2 months ago started to produce some white smoke under heavy acceleration and gradually as i worked my way through that tank of fuel it got worse, heavy acceleration produced a cloud of black smoke, upon reading many forums i took a look at the air filter and indeed it was clogged, nice easy job, new filter in and i still have the same problem, second full tank of diesel and and smoke is getting worse, 0-60 in 2 minutes to keep the smoke lvl down, car has full power and drives lovely as long as i dont look in the mirrors, i have also changed the fuel filter, it may be coincidental but the internal heater wires connection became black, crispy and intermitent, that has been fixed and is working fine, also i have noticed in the past week that the engine temp is not getting higher than 70 degrees even on a 80 mile trip, not sure why that is but i put some hardboard between the two rads to block airflow, with one eye on the temp guage and one hand on the internal fan switch i kept the temp around the 90 degree mark, but still the smoke, no matter what temp the guage sais i am getting lovely hot air in the car, also i have added diesel redex in these last two tanks of fuel, but everywhere i read sais redex is good,

any good advise on how to resolve this and get my car back to not poluting everyone who is behind me will be gratefully recieved

Black smoke=unburnt fuel so you either have to much fuel or to little air. Excessive fuel will give better than normal performance + smoke, insufficient air will normaly give poor performance + smoke. It is unlikely the the fuel has increased by itself so its most likely due to restricted air. Check all the pipes from the filter through the turbo and intercooler to see if any have collapsed. You could try disconnecting the air input pipe from the inlet manifold and see if it makes any difference, if it does the fault mut lie with the turbo or air pathway, if it doesn't I can only suggest that the pump is at fault.

thanks for advice, i shall have a good inspection 2morrow and see if the air flow is ok, car does seem to drive as normal tho, not entirely sure the redex or cold engine all the time has nothing to do with the smoke problem, i shall drain diesel 2morrow as well and try that

sounds like the thermostat and/or temp sensor need replacing to.

You shouldn't have to block the radiator ventilation up - bad idea.

The consumption and smoke from my HDi worsened gradually a couple of years ago (without getting as bad as yours sounds), despite my using tricks like conditioner. In the end I suspected the timing, and my indie adjusted that on the camshaft (the belt had not slipped). Car hasn't looked back - though I must admit that the biggest improvement I have found followed a new air filter. So might your recent work have left something not quite tight enough?

The same engine in my 405 runs at an indicated 72C when fully warmed and not towing. I only see 90C when stuck in traffic on hot days. I can see the thermostat cut in at 76/77 about two miles after starting off. It's my second 405 and behaves just like the first, so I guess it's working correctly.

It just occured to me that being a fairly late 1.9 td it may have EGR, it could be that this has stuck permanently on.

Further to Peters suggestion. To check the EGR from a cold engine, remove the vacuum pipe from the EGR valve. Start the engine & then carefully feel the tempurature of the link pipe from the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve close to the valve. If it gets hot very quickly its a sure sign the EGR valve is stuck open. If not, plug up the end of the vacuum pipe you removed & take it for a drive to see if there is any improvement.

thanx everyone for all the advice and info, i drained the tank of fuel containing redex, refilled with fresh diesel and just succesfully driven 80 miles with no sign of abnormal smoke, it seems that redex is the least popular additive on the market, and it certainly has a thumbs down with me and my 406, amazing to think that a bit of redex in a full tank of fuel can cause so much smoke and hassle
