Can anyone help?

I understand that learner drivers are not permitted to drive on motorways (i.e. M4, M1, M11 etc) but are roads like the A1M and A3M also classed as motorways or can you drive on them with L plates?

According to the signs the A1M is a motorway.

Read this article findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4158/is_/ai_n1425...0 - no, is the answer, as the M suffix implies M-way regulations.

I wonder how many 'kids with dads' learners have happily driven through the Leeds Inner Ring Road tunnels not aware this is the A58M and motorway regs apply?

Thanks for the replies :)

like the Mancunian way, A57(M) the clue is in the (M). These 'A' roads will also have a Motorway sign on the slip roads so it is quite difficult to miss.
