Forecast for Saturday here in the East says 'heavy snow showers' - how many of us will be good citizens and do as we're told by putting a shovel, blanket, thermos of hot coffee etc in the car and making a journey "only if it's absolutely necessary"???
And what do little old ladies mean when they say it's "too cold for snow?" Does this also apply in Siberia where it is very cold and there's lots of snow?
|
Snow! Oh My goodness !
Panic! - park your cars up and stock up on essentials! We'll get the severe weather warning soon and then the AA and plod will advise us to make essential journeys only.
How the hell we won 2 world wars I'll never know ;-)

"too cold for snow?"
It's nonsense. It just happens that it's much colder when there is no cloud cover to keep the heat in. No clouds - no snow.
|
|
Boggy,
I saw that on the local forecast this morning and thought they might have it wrong!
With regard to putting shovel, blanket, thermos etc in the car for the absolutely necessary journey. Not a chance. It uses too much diesel carrying all that extra weight around.
|
its the type of snow we have to be concerned about, just ask the people at british rail!!

Oh no. There will be gritters out spreading filthy salt on the road to rot our cars, and all because if someone so much as drops an ice-cream on the roads, we're liable to multiple crashes due to extremely poor driving skills.

People who prefer to "stay in" and watch soap operas on TV?
And what do little old ladies mean when they say it's "too cold for snow?"
They mean that, in their extensive experience of British weather conditions, that it's too cold for snow.
Does this also apply in Siberia where it is very cold and there's lots of snow?
No, Siberia is not part of the British Isles. It's over there ->, to the right of East Angular, even!
|
bring it on...working friday and sat night, setting of at 22.45...time to get the flying jacket out....ps...were did i put that shovel..................
|
|
Well, it will only be the second cold snap of the season, so there's just the slimmest of chances the gritters will be sent out. They'll probably need another chance though. Third time lucky, usually. ;-)
|
Too cold for snow? Not so nonsensical, given that very low temperatures (say, below zero all day) are usually in anticyclonic conditions with little precipitation potential.
|
|
The only panic is likely to be in the south.... Half-an-inch of snow one winter, I recall, caused complete chaos at Heathrow airport; fortunately I was on the first shuttle out of Manchester before dozens of incoming and outgoing flights were cancelled at LHR about an hour later.
You can also tell if they have had some snow south of Watford as the national television news has it as the main story all day and taking up 60 per cent of the programme.
Any further north perhaps gets a brief mention...:-)

You have TV up there now?
Snow? PAH. I had to reverse down a snow covered blocked pass in the alps on the 5th October! Bring it on.

>>You have TV up there now? >>
At least the world doesn't come to a standstill oop 'ere if there's a bit (or a lot) of snow around....:-)

Looks like they have Internet oop North too now ( must be dial - up )

Some of the posts are a bit old, the snow could have been days ago - they use IP up there

Stand-by for the usual load of media hype! Papers announcing that Britain is paralysed by a Siberian blast! Met persons telling us that the temperature will plunge to minus 2C. Latest horror from them is telling us that "A chilly night is on offer" It isn't on offer - we are stuck with it - unless we move! Don't go out unless your journey is really necessary. My journeys are always necessary - that is why I go out! Nanny State numbskulls! Rant will continue over the weekend
|
i always go for a slow drive for no reason in bad weather
|
Will it be "the wrong type of snow"?
|
|
i always go for a slow drive for no reason in bad weather
I go through phases doing that, and my tendency to do it usually coincides with my ownership of a RWD car!
I remember me, SWMBO's old MX-5, a good dump of snow, and a good hour of very low speed entertainment. She knew nothing about it, of course.

ah! 6:00am, fresh snow, big wide empty carpark, priceless

>>fresh snow, big wide empty carpark, priceless<<
Yep! last time we had snow me was doing 360's, side-slides, clipped one car, narrowly missed a woman, and I was only pushing our trolley back to our car! ;-(

My "dial-up" internet service delivers a consistent 6.5MB to 7.3MB connection...:-)

LOL. Maybe you really do have a different type of snow in the UK. During one of my many trips to Russia I once got caught in a blizzard just outside Moscow at -25C. At that temperature having snow blown into your face by the howling wind is actually painful.
|
snow?
s n o w?
S-N-O-W?
what is this 'snow' stuff?
:>)
32 degrees here today.
Will hit 35 by the weekend, they say.
Better check the radiator coolant levels etc

Let's hope it gets colder and colder so that hell freezes over - then Scotland stand a chance of getting beyond the quarter finals of the World Cup.!!
|
Just heard - it's only 7 centigrade in Orlando - so I suppose we Brits can't complain too much!

Oxford has just updated for "heavy snow". I'll believe it when I see it... the BBC forecast is next to useless for more than about an hour in advance.
|

I tend to agree.
|
Yep. www.weather.co.uk is predicting a nice sunny day in the London area on Saturday, no sign of snow. Brass monkeys temperatures, though.
|
I recommend metcheck.com.
|
"I recommend metcheck.com."
I'll second that
|
I use xcweather.co.uk. It's primarily a wind map for pilots but the weather forecast is good too, I like to use it as I live 300yds from one of the weather stations they use.
|
As I work (part-time) out of doors, I take a close interest in the weather, checking the BBC, The Met Office and Metcheck on-line. The next couple of days will be interesting to see who gets closest to what actually happens. For the Bury St Edmunds area, The BBC and Met Office are saying dry with some sun for today/Saturday, whilst Metcheck is saying rain showers today and snow showers tomorrow.
After scanning the websites, if I always heeded the most pessimistic, I'd never get anything done!
|
Down here in HJ land, Metcheck is saying dry, but cold Saturday. Snow or sleet for Sunday morning.
|
I support Metcheck. I listen to the BBC all the time, but the BBC/ Met Office staff are now dominated by those who vie with each other to say 'bitterly cold' with ever more emphasis as soon as it drops below 10C. When planning long cycling trips around Lancashire/ Lake District I have found Metcheck considerably more reliable. I well recall a grim ride over Hardkbnott and Wrynose passes in the rain when I wished I'd believed Metcheck rather than the Beeb.
|
Well after the "forecast" doom, gloom, and chaos, did anybody actually get any? - cold, wet, and windy here in Cumbria, although the Barometer is falling rapidly today.

Had I listened to the political led weather and traffic information on the BBC's radio output yesterday, I would never have ventured from my home to a town some 125 miles away. After all, the town I was visiting had been snowed up on, the roads would be blocked and all but essential travel was advised against.
Now on arrival there, ( the journey took no longer than it normally does ) I found the place to be free of both snow and rain. There were some snow showers later that afternoon which quickly melted as they hit the ground and I suspect that there may have been some that morning but not enough to form a layer
Clearly it suits the climate change doom sayers to describe this little bit of inclement weather as unheard off and dangerous just as much as it suits the anti motoring zealots to advise using the roads when ever they get the chance.
|
We must have had some overnight as there was a dusting on the shed roof and on the car windscreen this morning. Had already turned to rain though, despite -1C on the car temperature readout.
Wind was absolutely raw, but that was about the only thing of note.
|
There was a dusting on the car this morning which thawed by 10 am.( North Derbyshire ). Panic over.

Durham reporting in.
Less than an inch. Pretty much all gone, though slowly in the dark corners.
