Car manufacturers recommend replacing the seat belts after an accident but is this ever carried out? Could you insist on it being carried out when your car is being repaired? Obviously if the air bag has deployed it gets replaced but I wondered if seat belts are overlooked...

With modern cars that have 8 airbags and set belt pre tensioners, the deployment of that lot means seats, dashboard, steering wheel, headlining, and seatbelt stalks need to be replaced. usually enough to write off the car.

Very rarely would the whole lot go off together!
Front bags = front impact
side bags = side impact
BUT I do agree that the car would get written off if it was a medium type of accident.
heres some approximate prices.. (purely off the top of my head (30 years in the trade))
airbag £250 x 2
steering wheel £200
dash £700
seat belt with pretensioner £150 x 2
control unit for SRS £150
thats £1850 before we start the actual body repair!
not forgetting that there are normally a lot of expensive components just behind the front bumper - control units, sensors, EGR stuff, charcoal filters, etc......
But yeah... I would ask to see proof the belts have been changed IF the car was repaired.

Blimey AE... where was the point of impact? did it spin? was it repaired?

Impact was a 38 seat bus, into front offside wheel at 90 degrees. Yes it spun, no it was written off.

"Could you insist on new seatbelts?" Absolutely!
|
a sensable motorcyclist replaces his helmet afetr an accident incase it has a weak point.
A pal of mine was killed when he hit a tree because his seatbelt snapped!& he went through the screen. the corener said had the belt not broken he would of survived. we will never know for sure but the car had been involved in an accident 9 months earlier. For me I would alway insist on replacing a belt that had restrained someone.
