The engine is the 1.8 Endura diesel. I'm only getting 44 MPG running around local in a rural area and 47MPG on long journeys doing around 60 - 70 MPH. I have only just bought the car and on the assumption I would get about 50MPG, so I'm a bit disappointed. Is this normal for Fiesta diesels or could any adjustments be made by a garage to make it more fuel efficient.

Need to do basic checks first, things like tyre pressures, cleanliness of air filter element, and if you have just bought it, when was the car last serviced?
|
|
They're quite capable of up to 70mpg on a run - if properly set up.
Has the fuelling screw been tampered with - is it's seal still present?
Is the pump and cam timing correct?
Are the tappet clearances correct?
Has it ever been run on junk fuel?
Is the handbrake dragging?
|
I'll check the fuel screw and will have to get a garage to check the rest. It has only done 62000 and has a full service history. The handbrake and air filter are ok. I think 70mpg is unlikely.
|
You'd be surprised; big diesels are very efficient in 5th gear and it should pull like a train.
I acquired a leggy-but-mint van one as a workshop hack many years ago and I used to get 70mpg when picking up half-a-ton of alternator core 300miles away. [And my size 13s aren't gentle on the pedals...]

My 2.1td XM estate will better 50 mpg and that weighs over a ton and a half.
|
I owned a 96 Fiesta D 5-door Ghia and never had any problems of any sort until I came to replace it and found it was no longer offered and I couldn't upgrade a 5-dr. DL to the same spec..
|
All I want to know is what's wrong with mine. It pulls well and runs smooth. Is there such a thing as diesel engine tuner specialist? I'd like to avoid taking it to a Ford dealer @ £80 ph.

Was going to book the car into Fords for a diagnostic, I told them what the fuel consumption is and the engineer said the MPG I'm getting is correct for that model. Lesson: when it comes to fuel consumption beware of listening to other posters.
|
I had one of these and it did 50mpg at best.
Have the timing belt and tensioners been changed recently? If you think it has do you have proof? If you aren't sure get it changed and have the job done every 30,000 miles.
|
Its a pretty inefficient car then.

Thanks daveyjp an honest man at last.
According to Fords these cars are low geared which is the reason for the poor MPG. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't have the courier gearbox. I am disappointed such a small car and such lousy fuel consumption.
|
Might a dishonest man ask why, if they are so low-geared, [which they aren't; the diesel diff ratio is the highest available in that box] that the economy isn't then excellent around town?
My van could easily exceed 100 - low geared - don't make me laugh...
I've also driven a Courier - an absolute slug, as it was badly set-up. Like yours.

Mechanic; probably. Technician; possibly. Engineer; no chance!
Totally unqualified service manager/suit...?
|
For mechanic or technician,read apprentice!!

The last few posters seemed to be challenged by the FACT that the Mk 4 diesel is rubbish on fuel and they can't accept it. Very strange. Why should they care, it's my car?
|
Funnily enough - we don't....
If you want to believe it - go ahead.
|
Yes you do otherwise why reply.
|
I just find it difficult to believe that such a small car can give such a poor fuel consumption - I can only conclude that its because of the old engine design although the 12v 2.1 peugeot engine goes back to 1990 and does significantly better in a heavier car.
Is it turboed, if not that would explain a bit, not auto? that would explain a lot.
