Reading through postings on this site I am led to believe late model Cavaliers and early Vectras suffer from problems with damp affecting the ECU connections. Are there any measures one can take to reduce this when having to leave car parked outside during the winter.

Best left alone. But if you start to get trouble then a moisture disperant such as Damp Start or WD 40 might do the trick. If not, your only alternative will be to separate the connectors and thoroughly dry them out with a hairdryer, then re-cover the joint with heat-resistant waterproofing.

When I had a permanently damp mini, I used to open up a broadsheet
newspaper, open the bonnet and put it over the engine covering the leads.
It solved the problem, as after removing the damp paper in the morning,
the car used to start each time.
The biggest problem is remembering the paper's there, which I solved by
leaving a sheet of the newspaper over the steering wheel so I'd see it when
I got into the car in the morning.

A good squirt of WD40 every couple of weeks should solve the damp problems you describe. I have been using it throughout the appaling weather we have been suffering over the last 2 or 3 months' and my 7 year old Rover 214 which sits outside all the time never misses a beat.
