I'm definately no computer whizz, but today i'm having difficulty using the site, i can read about 2 pages and then when i select another page, the computer seems to freeze and if i try to go back after a few seconds a message appears about some dodgy script running and causing IE7 to slow down and i have to close the site and fire up again.

Am i doing something wrong, probably, or are others having similar problems.
This is occuring on both computers, but only on the HJ site.

Try disabling Shockwave Flash Object via Tools > Manage Add-ons > Enable or Disable Add-ons.

P.S. Don't get onto me if it doesn't work!

Working fine for me - using Firefox with AdBlockPlus.

same here. I'm running noscript as well though

Tried disabling Flash already - no difference this time.

Previous problems with scripts have named the problematic script - this one is anonymous...?

Im not having trouble as such altho pages are taking about three times as long to load.

Yep, disabling that flasher...ooer missus...didn't do it.

I am finding the site very slow today, I have been out of touch for a couple of weeks. Holiday, I refuse to take a laptop, and only just tolerate a basic mobile. Is this a recent problem? Its PFD cold here, I even saw sleet on the high parts of the M6 last night while driving home from the airport.
Forum difficult to use - KB.
Problems here too. Takes ages to load - bottom bar scrolls through hundreds of titles (I can just make out "adserve" and/or " doubleclick" as they speed through).
Forum difficult to use - jase1
Same here KB, running Firefox on Linux, intermittently getting the same problem. Refreshing the page a couple of times seems to sort it -- looks like a script somewhere is caught in a loop.

No probs on my Firefox/Vista combo.

I run Safari browser on Mac OS< and use SafariBlock to block troublesome domains, I have no problems while this blocker is activated, but if I tuen it off the pages load very slowly. In the Develop menu, I can see a network timeline graph and it seems to be the adverts which ate taking up to 20secs to load.

Forum seems fine now thismorning, thanks for the fix; i possibly need to get out more, was getting withdrawl symptoms without my HJ visit.;)

Appart from those darned popups for target which are now showing as "server too busy" (appropriately!) - and I've tried the previous fixes and all I did was lock myself out! When they originally started appearing I used to get one and then it'd stop which was fine, I could live with that - HJ why did they change it so one is produced every time you try to open a new thread?!!!!!
Forum difficult to use - harry m
i am having the same problem i now have 6 pages up saying server to busy,i'm giving up can't stand this every time i look at another thread.try again another day.

I'm still in the dark age - W98 and IE6 - but forum seems back to normal today. It's certainly much better for me since the popups switched to Dell from the previous ones (can't even be sure what they were for). They used to regularly freeze my PC after a few minutes - it got so bad I didn't even log in for months on end .. :-((
Forum difficult to use - Boggy
"Those darned popups" are sending my poor PC haywire right now, my taskbar at the bottom is completely full of 'em and I'm giving up trying to use this forum at home. My PC at work can 'just' handle it but I spend more time closing unwanted windows than reading any threads, and I only get an hour for lunch! I need my daily HJ fix too!
If I want to buy a Dell laptop, they will be the first to know! Can the provider of this mayhem not be traced and told to leave it out? I know this site is funded by the ads but preventing use of the site at all is surely a non-starter???

Having quelled the riot of pop-ups by blocking all in the IE blocker settings, I'm now getting this script error warning coming up after just a few clicks - and the browser then tends to hang completely. I've just switched to Opera to post this, seems to work OK; trouble is, I prefer to log on with a desktop shortcut, which only works with IE...

Users' experiences seem to be varying, but there's surely something to be sorted out here.

With a combination of FireFox 2.0..17, flashblock and adblock, I have had no problems at all recently...

I'll keep schtum in future, its gone pear shaped again, hopefully the experts will sort it tomorrow.

have been having trouble since friday on both IE7 & Firefox !
Forum difficult to use - Falkirk Bairn
Firefox 3.x or IE7 it is adware type info that is clogging the system.

This is painful; I've taken over an hour to answer only the first three questions on Technical.

The people who run this site need to get their fingers out and fix things fast. If the people like Screwloose, and many others who provide valuable information get fed up and go elsewhere I suspect many will follow them.

No problem here but I've got the usual culprits like doubleclick and adtech etc. blocked at the router.

If it is the advertisements causing the problem, then nothing can be done about it until the media company that host them open up for work on Monday morning.

OK on Firefox with me, but problematic last night. Firefox tells you which servers it is awaiting response from and it seemed to be the ads servers last night.

adserver.adtech.de being one.

I'm on Firefox. Seems to be scrolling through 3 or 4 ad servers whilst trying to connect to the site. Yes its slowing the whole job down.

I think it's finally cooked my chip. Now, a few minutes after re-boot, the whole screen freezes and - nothing. No mouse, keyboard, anything.

Hit reset and it works again; until you ask it to work a little harder then it freezes again. Even if you stay offline, it still just stops?
Forum difficult to use - ForumNeedsModerating
Yes, it's becoming rather ridiculous. It's what happens when adverts become more important than content - either that provided by HJ & co or the forum. I hope they take note - you never see Google in such a tiz; they have to make money from ads, just like HJ. Quality not quantity is the way.

Trouble at work yesterday - site very slow and a message about a Gateway Timeout. Running fast and normal now - 0510 - can't sleep! Adverts are the 'price' we pay for a cracking site which is free to all, IMO!
Forum difficult to use - Steptoe
Firefox kept on telling me it's sorry but has a problem and it's closing down.

This used to happen a lot with various websites until I lost patience and wiped it complete with cookies & plug-ins.

Now that I have reinstalled a 'clean' copy it only happens with this site. I have started to use IE7 just to browse this site & have no problems [perhaps it's not so fussy ;-)....]

IE7,NAV blocks them all..get some but set to open in new page so does not interrupt browsing..

Me too.
It's just done it again - six windows of "Server too busy " have suddenly opened.

Correction - make that about 12.

Seems to be Groundhog day again!

takes 30 seconds to load a page due to infinite number of adtech / doubleclick adware rubbish

Nothing happening here tonight, no adware popups, nothing, dont think I have changed any settings since the horrible weekend either, very strange.

I have just formated this PC and installed win XP. I made sure the internet worked by coming onto this site and straight away im getting the Dell pop ups. I thought people said it wasnt the HJ site that was creating these?
Well they are! Its very annoying i want to enjoy this site not have constant adverts popping up on my task bar.

I do not recall any such comment.

However, hints on how to deal with it are within this as well as the previous adware thread.
