Hi there,
Would really appreciate any help with the problems with my 406 HDi.90 bhp
Was running lovely, then i went away for 3 months over summer and it was left standing on my drive. My brother borrowed it to take his lads on holiday but only got about 20 miles into the trip when it went into limp mode and the e.m light came on. When I got back it drove ok until I gassed it up a hill and the same happened.I managed to drive it sympathetically without any trouble but now it's got worse and even show it a hill and it surges and goes into limp. I've had the codes read and got four:

P 1351 post heating circuit
P 1198 Fuel pressure regulator
P 1113 Fuel pressure regulator
P 0704 Clutch switch

I went to a breakers to get a fuel pressure regulator and he gave me a screw in switch type thing which screws into the fuel rail. No avail. It was a Bosch, mines a siemens. I tried disconnecting it and it did run a bit better, but slow. And after a while it started surging up hills again. Probably not good to run it like that anyway! I suppose the next step would be to find a decent fuel pressure regulator to check if that IS the problem.
I've heard so many stories about dodgy ECUs, bad earthing etc that I'm not sure what to do. Any advice appreciated. I would really like to fix it myself and don't want to give up yet and take it to a mechanic.
Cheers.....

Who read and defined those codes for you?

P1113 EDC16C3 - Diesel high pressure regulation circuit. Rail pressure below minimum pressure.

P1198 SID801 - Diesel high pressure monitoring. Flow regulator (VCV) at stop.

P1351 SID 803/EDC16C3 - Pre/Post heating relay circuit. Relay not controlled and glow plugs supplied.

P0704 EDC16C3-Clutch switch signal. No signal or signal incoherent.

No mention there of any faulty regulators. The weird mixture of codes merely indicates that the fuel rail pressure is lower than commanded. [VCV on its stop]

The cause of that low pressure could be the use of incorrect fuel; HP pump failing; excess leak-off from an injector; suction-side faults; air leaks; filter; anything. It will need an expert to determine which - using expensive equipment and years of experience. Take it to a diesel specialist.

Hey Screwloose,
Thanks for your wisdom.
I put a new filter on this afternoon and we're back to smooth, full-power running again!
I'll never neglect maintenance on this sensitive girl again!

Thanks again

Hi slugpug,

I'm looking at buying a '99 plate 405 HDi 90hp estate, BUT, the current owner has mentioned the E.M. showing and it being in "limp mode". I googled this problem and it led me to this thread. I appologise for any intrusion, but you said that you changed the "filter". I assume you meant the FUEL filter, after which it ran as normal?

Can you just clarify that for me within the next 24 hrs, otherwise the seller is going to break what otherwise appears to be a half decent motor.

*EDIT

I have just read another article on eBay of all places, re: LIMP MODE/FAP issues. Am I now to understand that you swapped out this FAP, (anti pollution filter), in order to correct the "limp mode" problem you were experiencing? If so, can you, (or any other member) enlighten me as to where I might find a helpful supplier of the cleaning agent and Eolys fluid to make the FAP on this car good, (assuming it IS the FAP at fault here ^^ ).

Many thanks,

onetruecharlatan.
