I have an 02 mazda 6 ts diesel estate with standard air-con. It has terrible problems with misting/condensation and I've tried pretty much every possible combination with the heating/ventilation/recirculation etc but always end up having to open the window and/or have the heating on full blast.
Any ideas of the cause or a suggestion for remedies?

Thanks guys.

See the other thread about a misting up Fiesta.
Also in your case, is the airconditioning actually working? My Passat effortlessly demisted the car interior in minutes even in the worst conditions.
Have the system serviced and things may improve.

Do you keep the air con running continually.

Our Volvo trucks will cover the whole of the interior in really heavy condensation unless you leave the aircon on the whole time, especially when left on fast tickover for an hour whilst the PTO is running, this does seem to be a a trait of some vehicle air conditioning systems.

The FM's are a pain for this, GB; we have some earlier day-cab ones without aircon believe me they're even worse!

Its the worst vehicle i've known for this since a 79 Seddon Atki, that would channel heavy rainwater straight over the heater matrix and completely obliterate the windscreen in seconds.

Surprised at Volvo, but considering they let the work experience boy decide where to sight those oversize mirrors (completely obliterating about 40% of the 3/4 offside view), maybe not so surprising after all.

When both our Honda Jazz and our Fiat Panda, both with aircon, began to mist up too much I cured the problem by renewing the cabin filters. When I took these filters out they were black with dirt.

It?s not a problem with my 2002 model, although I do have the AC running summer and winter.

In this cold weather my screen mists up initially - that's because I know there's a layer of grease on it and I keep forgetting to clean it. Quick blast from the demister sorts it out. I always have the climate control on auto/eco so never mists up again only initially.

If I leave the setting on Auto, Hyundai Coupe, the air con often does not run in colder weather. Seems fine when weather is hot. I have to switch on manually to demist better.

I'm with the wee scunner - leave it on auto and it will demist.
Although your pollen filter could be dirty/wet/damp.
It would be worth changing or checking this as well.

Sounds like that old chestnut about the damp pollen filter. All new cars have to have pollen filters (forget the glory days of live real air ventilation regulated from a dashboard knob - 2CVs and a few 4 x 4s of old - with a half hearted mesh grille to keep grasshoppers from shooting down your throat.
And some pollen filters are better designed than others (Some car designers actually drive the cars before finishing the design job!) meaning that the windscreen wipers can channel rainwater down into the pollen filter, rendering it useless and leaving windows permanently misted up.
So we inevitably return once more to the biggest automotive issue of or times... Does rubbing a cut potato on the windows really work?

A pin-hole hole in the heater matrix could be another cause.

I had that 10 years ago - matrix was pricey (not Mazda) and so was the labour as there was a problem accessing the unit to put new one in.

Best to chack around the carpets and look for damp spots, indicating a leak from somewhere. Also check in the loadbed - my astra used to mist up badly, and I tracked the problem down to a leak into the boot, which had half-filled up the spare wheel well with water!

It's more than likely caused by residual moisture in the aircon/heater unit coming back into the car after the aircon is switched off. It's inevitable that this will happen unless the air bypasses where the moisture collects, and perhaps more expensive cars have this arrangement. I don't expect you would get the problem in a Roller.

It would be impossible to design an aircon unit in which all the moisture drained out completely. The residual moisture will always have to dry by evaporation.

My remedy is to only use the aircon when I need its cooling effect, i.e in summer. I deal with normal condensation on the screens with the car heater (set to demist) and the front and rear screen electrical heaters.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll certainly try everything suggested apart from the half potato...or should I do that as well?
