Damage to tyre from RTA - stjarna
Hi,

This is probably a long shot but thought it was worth asking about.

Last night I witnessed an RTA (I was following a car that went across a junction, ignoring the Give Way sign, and crashed into a car going the other way).

I stopped, and called the police to report the accident - I gave a statement and then left the scene.

Unfortunately, by stopping where I did I crossed some of the debris and now have a tyre that needs replacing. If I'd just carried on the way I'd been going I'd have been fine.

Is there any way I can claim the cost of a replacement tyre from the insurance of the person who was at fault on the RTA, or do I just chalk this one up to bad luck?

Yes - I would contact the PC dealing with the collision. You also fall into the definition of having been involved in a separate accident.

And you did the right thing stjarna. Well done.

I'd be interested in what type of debris has damaged a tyre :o/

Must have been an older car then. A lot of car headlight lenses are made from acrylic and have been for quite a while.

Had the wheels balanced on the Astra last week, and while hanging about had a look at the tyre shop's 'wall of fame'. Pictures (and some in situ examples) of the stuff which pierces tyres and tyre walls. A hell of a lot of it was automotive debris - bits of twisted metal, bolts, hard shattered plastics etc.
Apparently the latter plastic, especially the shiny stuff off the inside of headlamps, is one of the worst offenders.

While I was waiting for the police to turn up a few other drivers crossed the scene... some nasty noises as the cars drove over what was there (even after I picked up any obvious bits).

I'll give the insurance route a go - if it doesn't work out then I'm no worse off than if I didn't try!

Only downside to that is when you look for renewal quotes next time. You can't answer no to the 'have you made any claims in the last x years' question. Answering yes could make more of a difference to the premium than the price of a tyre.
