To the 'old' MK V, it seems. I have been pricing up a new 1.4TSI 5dr hatchback to replace my nearly 4 year's old MKV 1.6FSI 'SE'.
There are only 3 models on offer i.e. 'S' 'SE' and 'GT'.
My biggest gripe so far is that a sunroof in no longer an optional extra on the 'S' or 'SE' only on the tarty, sporty 'GT'
However about £17.5k seems to be what I'll need to pay, which includes metallic paint, parking sensors and a steering wheel that will enable me to control my radio!!

It may be, arguably, a much better car but my goodness you have certainly got to fork out the money and this is for a car that is supposed to be cheaper to manufacture.

I think you also have to remember the whole purpose of this car was to make it cheaper to make. VW must be raking it in having put the prices up as well.
I have to say I do like it though, and it should be a good drive if it is as refined as the journalists say.

I think I will be beating a path to Toyota next - they seem to have a better understanding of what needs to be done to sell a car at the moment. The yaris has always been good, the new avensis looks great and once the auris gets the new avensis engines and they improve the interior that will also be a good car. Toyota always have good finance deals as well.

I know of 3 (including mine) all on the road perfectly happy, one of my neighbours as a 1990 H one. They out live larger cars simply due to simplicity and higher demand. There is no demand for a N neg Mondeo due to running costs.

Anyway back on topic, I don't understand why people will spend £17k on a brand new hatchback. For this reason I think the BMW 1 series is one of the most pointless cars ever.

at least BMW 1 has RWD, right?

tho I'd rather buy a 2 - 3 y.o. better car than a completely new Golf VI for that price. I like the Accord with the great 2.2 i-CTDi (few electronic mods, a better IC and it gets over 210 HP..)

A Lada Riva is also rear wheel drive :D

Reckon I would look for a nearly new 1.4 TFSi GT MkV. The same engine in the Mk VI seems to be 10bhp down.

I'm sorry but the 1.4 TSI is 122PS and is plenty enough for me and is more than my 1.6FSI and the new engine (turbocharged0 has considerably more torque and lower down as well.

However realising the omission of that sunroof from the optional extra lis,t might make me look elsewhere for my next car - of course we all know that VW keep on changing their specs on almost a weekly basis and so who knows what the model and the extras might be when I consider placing my order, in January 2009.

My word - 17 and a half grand for the peoples' car - ouch! I must be out of touch as I thought that was the lower reaches of Audi territory.

If you want it though - buy it and enjoy it.

Audi A3 Sportback 1.4T SE is just over £17k. With the few options the OP wants you'll be in a similar price bracket. I supect an Audi A3 SE may have more standard goodies than a VW SE too.

Having looked on the Audi website I say forget the Golf and wait for the new Audi A1 Sportback!

It does rather look as if VW are intent on improving their margins at both ends with the Mk VI. £17k+ is seriously ambitious money for a 1.4 mid-size hatch with a non-prestige badge, leaving aside the clever engine tech and big car refinement.

Admittedly, I paid £18k for a Mazda 3, but then it has a little more under the bonnet (more than twice as much in fact!)

£17.5k is a ludicrous amount of money for a 1.4 litre mid sized family hatchback, however clever its engine.

That said, retaining an image that allows them to get away with pricing like that takes some doing. It's clearly a business model that works for them, and is something a lot of other manufacturers would kill for. I just hope the product is up to it.

It works for them in Europe - it does not really work for them anywhere else where reliability and service come number 1 in the list of priorities. (I am not saying it is unreliable by the way).

I've just priced up an 1.4 FTSI Audi A3 sportback in SE guise and by the time I had added a few extras, but excluding a panoramic sunroof (£1050), I was practically up to £19 grand and then would be short of a few of the things the new Golf MK 6 has! so that's a no brainer then!

A huge amount of money for the badge, when you can pick up an 08 Focus for £7999 or a Mondeo for about £6K! Both will more than do the job for you, leaving a nice TEN THOUSAND POUNDS!!!! you didn't spend!!!

You'll get 10% off the Audi (possibly more through a broker) - I bet VW won't be offering that of a Golf VI yet - so back to £17k.

Local Audi dealer is also offering a minimum £1,000 dealer contribution on all new cars too - £16k!
