Maybe people have finally woken up to the fact they if you spend 750 quid on an old barge you can have auto, cruise, aircon and leather as opposed to the tin shed you'd get if you spent that money on a fiesta or a Corsa.

Absolutely.
Am I alone in thinking that most people who use the expression 'barge' or 'luxo-barge' have never been fortunate enough to own a nice big motor?
|
Interesting point - I am currently thinking of returning to a large vehicle (around 2000 reg for VED reasons) - only do about 6 - 8 K a year, so fuel is not a massive issue for me. Quite fancy a 2.8 A8 - had an A6 with the same engine and have fond memories of it.
Anyway, I was also thinking that the prices were a little more than I was expecting

Here real laugh - T-reg Iveco horsebox - £165 for 12 months, now thats value!

A8s?
I looked and the gearboxes tend to die after 80k miles. NOT cheap.
Well known weakness. Beware.
And there are wiring issues.. affecting sterring column and security..

I'm half thinking of another A6, but I'm sure the prices are higher than they were a few months ago. Or (in moments of complete madness) an XJS. HJ's review of the A8 was enough to put me off thinking about it for more than 5 seconds.
I doubt it's the VED change. An extra £200 is only 2 tanks of petrol. Or 2 tyres. Or two dinners out for 2.
BTW I used the term "barge" because it was easier than "nice big car" and I thought everybody would know what I meant...!

Petrol, dinners and tyres are items we either don't mind spending 200 notes on, or actively relish spending 200 notes on.
VED is another kettle of fish - it's a tax and people tend to try to avoid paying taxes where possible because they resent paying it. To such an extent that I would not be surprised to hear of people spending a grand or two more for an older car which will then attract less duty. Might be the old cutting/nose/face shuffle, but we're not always 100% financially rational especially when it comes to trying not to pay tax.

mike A8s?

Thanks for the advice - a colleague also made the point that at that level a big repair probably means scrap........
Perhaps I might have to reconsider and move my aspirations back to an A6 :-)

"as opposed to the tin shed you'd get if you spent that money on a fiesta or a Corsa" - great if you can ignore the extra petrol costs, higher parts prices and insurance costs.
