Relative offered a Mazda 323 '94M 1.5GLX 5dr Metallic 51k - dealer wants £3k, I think 2.5k max - realistic?

Be aware there was a model change at this point. An early vehicle as you describe (which I think would have been a 1.6 not 1.5 in GLX trim)is worth about £1000.
The later vehicle is only worth anything like £2500 with full Mazda history, dealer facilities and a stonking trade in. This isn't really the way to buy an M-reg car though, a private purchase should find a nice pensioner selling a clean one for perhaps under £2000.
Remember M-reg is getting old now and loads of clean vehicles of this age trade well under £1000.
Have a look at Parkers website, I bet they say something similar.
